Same here. I've been watching a Hebrew-subbed version of the show, and they refer to Kino as male whenever there's a pronoun involved (does Japanese have gender-specific pronouns), but female whenever there's some other form of gender specific address, such as "little girl". I've assumed Kino is female, but the translator mistakenly assumed she was male (and retracted this assumption when clearly stated otherwise, as in the case of "little girl"), but I'm less than certain about this. 82.166.53.176 15:47, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
Well, Google sez female. And the storybook episode's Hebrew subs clearly referred to her as a scientist's daughter (in that brief "reality as an illusion" sequence). So there you have it, I guess. 82.166.53.176 15:50, 19 June 2006 (UTC)
I believe Japanese has gender-specific pronouns, yes. I myself am working off of English subtitled episodes, but I haven't gotten up to any "storybook episode" (I don't have that much time to watch...); I'll be sure to pay close attention to the English translation- Google has been known to be wrong. --maru (talk) contribs 20:02, 21 June 2006 (UTC)

The fourth episode, "Land of Adults", proves she is female, but this information could be considered a spoiler due to the partially intentional nature of Kino's androgynous...ness. (Well, it sounded intellegent up 'til then, eh?) In the Japanese version, she uses the male word for I, "boku" - although she referred to herself with the female form "(w)atashi"? when younger... 70.58.168.70 01:47, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Kino is nefinately female. In the episode 'Land of the Adults', she sais herself that she is a girl. The primary reason she calls herself 'boku', the male form, is that the name Kino doesn't really fit with 'watashi', the female form.

[edit] Names

If I remember correctly, Kino's original name was never revealed in the anime, thus the statement that her original name was "Lily" is not necessarily true (though it is hinted at such). Also, I don't think "Sakura" really translates to "Lily" - lily in Japanese is yuri, not sakura (which in English would be the equivalent of "cherry blossom"). Because of this, I'm editing the names to their correct forms. (just a... heads up of sorts? if anyone wants to dispute this, step up.) 140.109.55.225 07:34, 19 August 2006 (UTC)ray=out


[edit] Persuaders

I don't really think that the 'persuader' is the correct name for Kino's revolver. In the novel, the term 'persuader' means any kind of firearms.


By the way, wasn't the automatic called the 'person of the forest' because the man, presumably the disciple of the Shishou, said so when he gave the pistol to Kino? That's what I remembered in the second book of the novel.

Alrighty, first time I've ever wrote in a talk page. hah

I'm not sure, but since Gakuen Kino retains the characters from Kino no Tabi and is (I'm pretty sure, anyway) by Keiichi Shigusawa, do you think that it deserves a mention?

To be honest, until you mentioned it, I had no idea Keiichi Shigusawa was coming out with Gakuen Kino! I dunno -- I can't read Japanese either. Until more information comes out, I say we wait. --Choi9999 03:12, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
Huh, it seems it's in the Japanese article under "学園キノ". Heh, we need someone who can read Japanese. Agreed, until we get more information, we wait.
