Kingdom of the Iclingas

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kingdom of the Iclingas was the precursor of the Kingdom of Mercia in the history of Anglo-Saxon England, established around the year 520. Its name is derived from Icel, father of Cynewald, grandfather of Cnebba, and great-grandfather of Creoda of Mercia. The Iclingas became known as the Mercians ("Lords of the March") circa the year 584.

Icel's lineage is discussed in the Vita Sancti Guthlaci ("Life of St. Guthlac").
