King Neptune (voiced by John O'Hurley in the TV series, voiced by Jeffrey Tambor in the movie) is a fictional character in Nickelodeon's animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants. The character has made three appearances (somehow, he looks completely different in each appearance). The first was in the episode "Neptune's Spatula". The second was in the episode "SpongeBob's House Party (Party Pooper Pants)," which had a live-action version of him. His third appearance was in the 2004 movie The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie with his daughter Princess Mindy, where he was one of the central characters. He's also one of the reappearing guest stars of the series. In the series, he has excellent taste in Krabby patties, and he takes SpongeBob SquarePants on as his own personal fry cook. A picture of King Neptune, as seen in "Neptune's Spatula", was shown in "Krusty Towers".

His name is taken from the ancient Roman god of the sea, Neptune. Often, his name---or that of his namesake---is used in expressions indicating divinity, such as "By Neptune!" or "Neptune preserve her!" This and his apparent powers imply Neptune is supposed to be a god rather than simply a king. Krusty Towers implies the current Neptune is one of a long line, as Squidward mentions "Neptune XIV," though no known number is attached to the current Neptune.

In Krusty Towers there is a mention of Neptune XIV implies that there was more than one King Neptune that has ruled the sea. This could also explain how King Neptune looks different in every appearance. They could be different King Neptunes. The Neptune declared to be "XIV" looked exactally like the Neptune in "Neptune's Spatula." In the book, "SpongeBob and the Princess," Princess Neptune (who does not resemble Mindy) comes to Bikini Bottom. Since the Movie takes place sometime after the actual series, this could Imply that Neptune XIV is the father of Princess Neptune from the book and King Neptune (XV) in the Movie. Thus, Neptune XIV would be Mindy's grandfather.

[edit] Trivia

  • On the episode where SpongeBob removes the spatula from the rock, King Neptune was muscular, more blue, a lot of hair, and didn't have a big nose. But in the The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, he wasn't muscular, more paleish green, less hair, and had a big nose. One expanation was over the episodes he could of lost strength, got sick, went bald, and grew a big nose. Another is the creators got tired of the old image of King Neptune.
