The school is located in the West End, with two elementary schools feeding in. Some students are from other areas of Vancouver who wish to be in a smaller school environment. The school is the smallest high school in both size and enrollment in Vancouver. There are about 500 students enrolled.

Since July 2006, King George Secondary has been approved by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme for students in grades 8 and 9. Only 2 schools has been approved by IBO MPY Programme in the city.

The school is adjacent to the West End Community Centre, enabling youth to get more involved in their programs.

[edit] Special programs

King George is noted for its "Technology Immersion" program which lasts from grade 8 to 9. Students in the programme use computers to enhance their core subjects. Most of their assignments are completed in Microsoft Word and they learn HTML and how to use programs like Microsoft Publisher. Students who participate in this program are known in their school as "techies" and have a unique opportunity to have half of their courses with the same group of people for two years.

King George also has a "City School" program for grades 10, 11 and 12 that involves students to leave the traditional secondary school setting and work in a more challenging, independent setting, with different block rotations, smaller groups of people, and only being with a few teachers. This program is described as a "school within a school."

King Geogre is now also an IBO MYP approved school, offering such programme to the students of grades 8 and 9.

City School and Technology Immersion accept students throughout Vancouver.
