Kindergarten Cop (1990) is a film directed by Ivan Reitman and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schwarzenegger stars as John Kimble, a tough loner police detective, who goes after drug dealer Cullen Crisp (Richard Tyson), before he can get to his ex-wife and son. Pamela Reed plays his partner Phoebe O'Hara, a teacher-turned-cop. Linda Hunt is the diminutive Miss Schlowski, the school principal. Carroll Baker plays Cullen's mother, Eleanor, and Penelope Ann Miller plays Joyce, the 2nd grade teacher who becomes Kimble's love interest.
[edit] Plot
Police Officers Kimble and O'Hara go undercover in Astoria, Oregon, to find the ex-wife and son of drug dealer Cullen Crisp, who is under investigation for murder. Since their appearance is not known to them (the last picture of the son, 'Cullen Jr.', was taken at the age of three months), O'Hara was to act as the substitute teacher of the son's kindergarten class at Astoria Elementary School and Kimble was to track down the identity of the mother.
Unfortunately, O'Hara, who is hypoglycemic, falls ill at the last moment, so Kimble takes the teacher's job, much to the suspicion of the school principal. Despite having no teaching experience - and thus facing a lot of stress initially - Kimble develops a real talent and shows his soft side by working with a class of 5 and 6 year old kids. He also falls in love with one of the female teachers named Joyce, who later turns out to be Crisp's ex-wife Rachel. Her son Dominic - 'Cullen, Jr.' - is in Kimble's class.
Due to the machinations of his mother, Crisp is released and - along with his mother - arrives at the school. He deliberately causes a fire which triggers the school fire alarm and initiates building evacuation, during which he abducts his son. In a final shootout, Crisp wounds Kimble, but Kimble then kills him. His mother shoots Kimble, seriously wounding him, but is then knocked out by O'Hara.
The movie ends with Kimble making his most important decision: to form a couple with Rachel.
[edit] Trivia
- In this movie, Schwarzenegger gets a reference to his Austrian roots by playing an immigrant Austrian cop. Also, he gets to speak two discernible but short German sentences as he carries O'Hara into the motel: "Das macht mich stocksauer. Jetzt bin ich sauer." ('This makes me stinking mad. Now I'm mad.')
- A ferret features prominently in this movie. Campaigners in California — the state of which Schwarzenegger is governor — are currently fighting for a law to legalise the animals as pets in their state.
- Bill Murray and Danny De Vito were considered for the role of John Kimble.
- Many celebrity prank calls use lines from this movie. (Example: "I'm a cop you idiot!")
- The film was shot in the town of Astoria, Oregon.
