KIMT is a CBS affiliate television station serving Mason City, Iowa, Rochester, Minnesota and Austin, Minnesota. Its transmitter is located near St. Ansgar, Iowa. It currently broadcasts the My Network TV prime time schedule after CBS's late night block is complete.
It signed on for the first time on May 15, 1954 as KGLO-TV, owned by Lee Enterprises along with the Globe Gazette newspaper and KGLO radio (AM 1300 and FM 101.1). On the station's first day on the air, signals were reported as far away as Gary, Indiana. The station was affiliated with both CBS and DuMont until 1956, when DuMont ceased operations.[2]
In the 1970s, the FCC with only a few exceptions, barred common ownership of radio and television stations in the same market. KGLO-TV was thus sold to B-Y Communications in 1977 and renamed KIMT. In 1980, KIMT was sold to the Shott family of Bluefield, West Virginia. However, in 1984, the Shotts sold KIMT and WBTW in Florence, South Carolina to Spartan Communications, giving KIMT its third owner in eight years. Spartan merged with KIMT's current owner, Media General in 1997.
Early on the morning of June 27, 1995, KIMT news anchor Jodi Huisentruit was abducted outside her apartment while on her way to work. Huisentruit was never found and the case was never solved.
On April 6, 2006, Media General announced that it would sell KIMT as part of its acquisition of four NBC owned and operated stations. [3] On August 2, 2006, New Vision Television, LLC announced it had bought KIMT and sister station WIAT in Birmingham, Alabama for $35 million. NVT's acquisition of the two stations was finalized on October 12, 2006. [4]
