From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Killaloe is a village in east County Clare, Republic of Ireland, situated in the midwest of Ireland. The village is on the south end of Lough Derg, while the settlement spreads across the River Shannon, with the County Tipperary side known as Ballina. The surrounding area is popular for hill-walking.
Killaloe also gives its name to a the second largest diocese in Ireland, comprising the greater part of County Clare, a large portion of County Tipperary, and parts of Counties Offaly, Laois and Limerick, stretching from Birr Parish in the north to Toomevara Parish in the East and to Carrigaholt Parish in the west of the diocese. In the Church of Ireland divisions, the diocese is now part of the United Diocese of Limerick and Killaloe. The pre-Reformation St. Flannan's Cathedral is now the Anglican Cathedral; the Pro-Cathedral for the Catholic Diocese is in Ennis.
The University of Limerick has its outdoor pursuits centre near Killaloe, on the shore of the lake.
