[edit] User Name
My User name is a rough transliteration of the Persian خرد meaning wisdom (Devanāgarī: ख़िरद), and can also be a Parsi name. I use it on the internet because:
- It sounds like my real first name
- I have an
interest inobsession with Zoroastrianism - And an interest in India
[edit] Personal Info
I'm a 26 year old American now living in Tucson, Arizona; but was born and raised in Vancouver, Washington USA. I am a self described eccentric and my interests reflect this. I am also honest and upfront about my POV whilst of course aspiring towards a NPOV when editing - should be a given, but unfortunately, there are some out there pushing POV agendas.
[edit] Interests
- Religion: My main interest is comparative religion. Specifically Zoroastrianism; but also the occult, esotericism, neo-paganism and world mythology. This includes subjects such as the Golden Dawn, Wicca, Sufism, et cetera. Although, I have good basic knowledge of all Major World Religions having read the Bible, Qur'ān, Bhagavad Gīta, Tao Te Ching, Analects of Confucius, several Buddhist suttas, and the Zend-Avesta to name a few. Personally I consider myself an Agnostic Existentialist. My favorite author is Friedrich Nietzsche. Having first read Thus Spake Zarathustra in the 8th grade, he has remained close to my heart, and his books have a prominent place on my bookshelf. I admire Robert Green Ingersoll and respect the down-to-earth, whilst diabolically humorous insights of Anton Szandor LaVey.
- Languages: In High School I took German and have studied Hindi independantly and been privately instructed for over 3 years. I also have an interest in other languages and writing systems. Some of the languages I have an interest in besides German and Hindi are other languages of India, Irish, Gaelic, other Celtic languages, Avestan, Ancient Greek, Latin, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, Hebrew, and so on. Note that by 'interest' I do not imply any sense of proficiency. It merely means I bought a book, and/or have researched it on the internet.
- Politics: Politically I would describe myself as a Social Democrat. My political compass is: Economic Left/Right: -8.00; Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -5.64. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that some of my favorite political writers are Trotsky, John Maclean, and Noam Chomsky. Although those that probably more closely represent my views are Jon Stewart and Bill Maher! I have also been personally involved in and supportive of the Scottish National Party, which promotes Scottish independence. As such, I am also sympathetic to the Sinn Féin, Plaid Cymru, and support greater autonomy or independence for Cornwall, Brittany, and Galicia. Besides pan-Celtic nationalism I support any group's (within reason) right of self-determination.
- Music: As far as music is concerned I have been a drummer/percussionist for 15 years and over the years have participated in School band, Marching Band, Jazz band, Orchestra, Pipe band, bar band, etc. What I listen to, therefore, is diverse. Drummers which have influenced me include Bill Bruford and Danny Carey. But my favorite genres paradoxically have little remarkable drum work, if any at all. These are Goth Rock, Darkwave, Industrial, EBM, Synthpop, Medieval Rock, Death Rock and I particularly identify emotionally with Ethereal. In addition; I like traditional Persian music, Arabic top 40, and the music of India like Indian Classical music, Qawwali, Bhangra, and of course Bollywood Filmi music.
- History: I'm a history buff and an History Channel addict, though I am sometimes disappointed by the focus on entertainment over facts, and its hyperfocus on WWII. Besides American history I am knowledgeable of Scottish history. I also have an interest in the Celts, and, to make things short: the history of the World in general. This includes related fields of study such as cultural anthropology, historical linguistics (especially etymology), archaeology, and of course military tactics and technology - because history is written by the victor. I do not make any claims of expertise on any of the aforementioned subjects though!
- Proverbs: I love "collecting" proverbs from around the world. Not only are they invaluable in comparing and contrasting different cultures, but I find the wisdom distilled in them often just as profound, sometimes more, than religious scriptures. In addition to proverbs, an arsenal of quotations always comes in handy!
- Literature: Some of my favorite authors include: Hesse, Novalis, Goethe, Poe, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Sade, Rumi, Khayyám, Mirabai...
- Vexillology: Since I was a kid I have always been interested in vexillology. I never memorized the periodic table or the square root of anything, but I can identify obscure flags from memory. Just one of my many trivial talents.
- Psychology: A general interest in mental illness, such as, but surely not limited to - clinical depression, primarily because of personal experience.
[edit] My Contributions and Edits
