KHGE

Big Country 102.7, KHGE-FM is a radio station located in Fresno, CA. Its previous format was KALZ , Alice 102.7. It is now at 96.7, replacing its Smooth Jazz format. It was previous named Cat Country 102.7.

102.7 FM was originally a Schulke formatted Easy Listening station with the callsign KKNU, "Easy 103". In 1985, the Schulke format was dropped in favor of a Soft Adult Contemporary format known as "103 FM".

In March of 1988, KKNU hired popular "Y-94" morning host Nick Ryan to take over morning duties for KKNU. The morning of April 1, 1988, Nick Ryan supposedly barricaded himself in the control room all day to protest the "wimpy music" played on "103 FM". This was all a stunt to promote the format change to a more upbeat Adult Contemporary format. At 3 PM that day, KKNU's callsign was changed to KTHT to reflect the new station nickname of "K-Hit 102.7". The "K-Hit" nickname did not last long, in September of 1989 new station jingles were ordered that simply said "102.7 KTHT".

In 1992, the station's nickname was changed to "Mix 102.7", but the music was largely unchanged. In 1994, new station ownership changed the station to a unique AC format designed to capture some of Fresno's large Hispanic audience while keeping the "Mix 102.7" name. The station was a ratings success, being #1 in it's target demo of Women 25-54, while placing in the top 15 of listeners 12+. In 1996, the station was sold again, this time to owners who weren't quite as savvy to the Fresno market. They made radical changes to the music, and hired the Rik & Lorraine morning show from "B-95". By the time Capstar Broadcasting (Capstar eventually being absorbed into Clear Channel) got ahold of the station it was doing very poorly in ratings and revenue. On April 1, 1998, "Mix 102.7" was switched to KALZ, "Alice @ 102 dot 7". The format change occured exactly 10 years after the KTHT callsign was adopted.

In December of 2005 the format and callsign of KALZ was moved down the dial to 96.7 FM to make room for the new Country format that would appear at 102.7.
