Hi Khalid

I noticed that you had made a lot of edits to an article on the town of Weeze. (There were also a lot of edits by someone who hadn't logged in, was this you as well?) Unfortunately it appears that the text all came from Weeze's own website, and that website is quite clear about people not copying material from it. As such, it is a violation of their copyright, and so is against Wikipedia policy. So I am afraid I was obliged to revert the article back to its very first edit, which appeared to be original. I have explained things in a little more detail on the talk page for Weeze. If you disagree with me, you can leave me a message on my talk page and say why you think that text was not a copyright violation. Your text has not been lost, it's just removed from view.

Also, I noticed that you had uploaded some good pictures of Weeze:

Did you take these, or did you find them on the web?

Sorry about the time I've taken to get back to you, Khalid. There are several issues here:

  1. You say that you are the author and translator of the text on the Weeze website. That's good; but we need to be sure that owner of the copyright agrees with the material being placed here. If you wrote that text while at work on behalf of your employer, then your employer, the Municipality of Weeze, is the owner of the copyright, not you. Perhaps you could obtain written permission from your employer that it is okay for the text to be copied to Wikipedia and placed under the GFDL. After all, there is a notice on the website that is quite clear: "...none of the information shown on this site or of the information downloaded from this site may be reproduced or saved in an automated database in any way or form...". That is quite a strong injunction against loading it onto Wikipedia.
  2. The second issue is that the tone of text used for a town's website is very different to the tone of text used in an encyclopedia. For example, something that said "Paris is a wonderful city! Its art galleries, architecture and history make it one of the greatest cities in the world", might be perfect for a website wanting to make people visit Paris, but it's not what one would expect to read in an encyclopedia. That's much more likely to say something like "Paris is the capital and largest city of France. Located on the river Seine in the country's north, it is a major cultural and political centre of Europe and the world's most visited city."
  3. Third, there was some text on Weeze's twin town of Watton, and that also had a paragraph on the unit of land called a 'hundred'. Whatever the text in the Weeze article says, the proper place for writing about Watton is the article at Watton, Norfolk, and the proper place for writing about a hundred is Hundred (division). Perhaps you might like to transfer some of the text and facts from those sections you wrote into those articles (but be mindful of copyright).
  4. Finally, you don't need to ask me or anyone to retrieve your text. I've done nothing to it, and you can access it simply by going to the article history and selecting the version you want.

I hope I haven't discouraged you. It's just that Wikipedia needs to be very careful about where its articles come from. Otherwise the Wikimedia Foundation might be vulnerable to being sued by copyright holders. Here's a good page on copyright: Wikipedia:Copyright FAQ.

In your job, and speaking German and English, you're in the perfect place to find a great deal of information about Weeze. I'm sure there's an excellent article to be made from that.

If you have not created the image yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the image on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the image yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the image also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture then you can use {{GFDL}} to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the image qualifies as fair use, please read fair use, and then use a tag such as {{fairusein|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other images, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. Hello Stan. Thanks for the information. When I uploaded the pictures I followed the steps outlined for photograph uploads and added when the photograph was taken, who took it and how it may be used in Wikipedia. The specifications - source and copyright - given were complete so I am surprised that the photographs, which I personally took, did not contain the required information under image for publication in Wikipedia. Hello Longhair. Thanks for the information. I followed the steps required for uploading the photographs and indicated the source and copyright information required for uploading photographs. I presumed all was okay, but obviously the steps I followed were not correct. With the threat of removal of the Weeze page I would like to take this opportunity to verify the correctness of the information provided. I work for the Municipality of Weeze in Germany and am responsible for the PR work and internet publication of all matters relating to Weeze.
