Kharlan War

The Kharlan War is a fictional event in the video game Tales of Symphonia by Namco.

The Kharlan War was a global conflict between the countries of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. No one knows when or why the war began, but it ended approximately 4,000 years before the beginning of the game, just before Martel was killed and the countries divided into separate worlds. It is claimed that the war lasted a thousand years.

The war resulted in a massive consumption of mana through use of magitechnology weapons and defense systems. Mana was provided by the Kharlan Tree in sufficient quantities to support comfortable living with magitechnology in times of peace, but the war consumed more mana than the Great Tree could produce, so it began to wither away. All that was left was the Great Seed, which leaked minuscule amounts of mana compared to the Tree from which it had fallen; there was not enough mana to support the world, so Mithos Yggdrasill was forced to divide the world in two, keeping them balanced so that one was prospered while the other was destitute, allowing them to switch via the Journey of Regeneration. This system kept the Great Seed and Martel, whose soul was bound to it, alive and balanced between the worlds, caged and kept from growing with four mana links, between the opposing Summon Spirits of different worlds. It also suppressed the development of magitechnology, preventing massive wars.
