Khan (name)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Khan is a widespread family name. It can have one of several connotations, all related to some extent to the title of khan. The term is used almost universally as a surname, or almost a suffix by people of Pashtun (Pathans) ethnicity living in Afghanistan and Western Pakistan. In this way, it is often a synonym for Pashtun. Khan is most common surname in Pakistan.

It is also a family name for people that were bestowed the title of Khan Sahib or Khan Bahadur by the British Raj in modern-day Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

It is also a common surname in South Asian Muslim families, regardless of ancestral relationship to Pathans or to those bestowed with honorary titles. Khans can be found in Indian cities like Hyderabad, Bhopal, Bangalore and Mysore.

Khan is up near the top of the list of common Indian surnames, along with honorary titles such as Patel/Singh of North India.[citation needed]
