KGBeast is a fictional character appearing in DC Comics, primarily as an opponent of Batman. His name comes from the former secret Soviet Police called the KGB.

[edit] Background

The KGBeast made his first appearance in Gotham City conducting a wave of murders, the last of whom was intended to be the President of the United States — at the time, Ronald Reagan — during his visit to Gotham. This storyline 'Ten Nights of the Beast ran through Batman 417 - 420 and was later reprinted as a trade paperback. The Beast showcased his ruthlessness when he poisoned an entire banquet, killing over a hundred people, just to ensure his target would die. KGBeast then beat Batman in combat, fleeing only because he thought Batman had back-up.

During a later encounter, Batman caught KGBeast's left wrist in a loop of the bat-rope. The Dark Knight figured KGBeast would simply hang there until somebody showed up to arrest him. However, rather than be captured, KGBeast cut off his own hand with an ax. He later returned with a cybernetic gun prosthetic attached to his wrist. After he botched his assassination attempt and failed at a counterfeiting scheme, he was imprisoned in Blackgate Prison. His protegé, the NKVDemon, surfaced in Russia, but was killed by Batman's ally, Soviet police detective Nikita Krakov.

In Detective Comics #817, KGBeast was thrown from a roof by a man thought to be Two-Face, after the Beast botched an assassination. His lifeless body was later found by the police, his death caused by two gunshots to the head. Two-Face appears to be innocent in the murder; the killer seems to be a man hired by the Great White Shark.

[edit] Other media

KGBeast appeared in the Justice League Unlimited episode, "Kids Stuff", where he, Blockbuster, Cheetah, and Copperhead were robbing a gold vault. He later made a couple of background appearances as a member of Gorilla Grodd's Legion of Doom.

A minor enemy appearing only once in stage 1 the loosely movie-based Batman game for NES was referred to as KGBeast. He was found standing outside the passage to the first boss. Most of the time, however, it is possible to defeat KGBeast before he can even begin to fight.
