KGB (Belarus)

The KGB, in Belarus (transliteration of "КГБ"), is the Russian-language acronym for the Committee for State Security (Russian: Комите́т Госуда́рственной Безопа́сности ; transliteration: Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti) is that country's secret police and is the successor organization to the State Security Committee (Russian: Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), or KGB, of the Soviet Union.

Major General Stsyapan Sukharenka, former deputy chairman, was appointed its leader in 2005. The KGB is controlled by the president, Alexander Lukashenko.

Felix Edmundovich Dzerzhinsky, who founded the Cheka (the original Bolshevik secret police) was born in what is now Belarus and remains a national hero.

Another Belarusian secret police is the Presidential Guard.
