KFYR is a radio station located in Bismarck, North Dakota. It broadcasts at 550 kHz. Its 5 kW signal can be heard in seven U.S. states and three Canadian provinces, making it have the largest listening area of a North Dakota radio station.
It began playing ethnic German Oom-pah music until somtime in the early sixties. when it switched to popular and oldies format. It was very popular with the teen set by virtue of its "torrid twenty" count down show which featured the twenty popular hits of the week. It was revamped in the late 1990s and since then has broadcast a variety of programming, with news and talk radio in the day, and music during the evening.
Because of it's location near the end of the AM band and because of North Dakota's flat landscape it can be heard in five states and two Canadian provinces. It has the largest land coverage area in the United States of any AM radio station during daytime hours. The station is owned by Clear Channel Communications.
Clear Channel also owns KXMR 710 (Sports), KBMR 1130 (Classic country), KYYY 92.9 (Adult Contemporary), KQDY 94.5 (Country), and KSSS 101.5 (Classic Rock) in the Bismarck-Mandan area.
