Talk:KFJZ (AM)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Part of the KFQB and KTAT prehistory for KFJZ is accurate, but it all concerns a different radio station.
That KFJZ was on 1270 AM at Fort Worth. The station is today known as KFLC and is owned by Univision radio.
The station described here began on 2-15-1947 as KCNC. It operated with 250 watts, days only on 870 khz. It had studios in downtown Fort Worth, and a tower at 2214 East 4th street. In 1958 the station changed owner (Kirk Johnston, James Schueller, and actor Jimmy Stewart bought it), changed call letters to KJIM, and moved it's studios to the tower site.
The station format was general music. In 1962 it had an FM station on 102.1 called KJIM-FM.
A company owned by William C. Windsor bought the station in the early 60's. Windsor sold the 870 AM in 1966 (to Broadcast Consultants Corporation, a division of Tracey Locke Advertising in Dallas). He kept KJIM-FM, which he renamed KFWT-FM, and developed a channel 21 station called KFWT-TV in 1967.
KJIM (AM) sold in 1975 to Fort Worth KJIM, Inc. They changed the format from Middle of the Road music to "Redneck radio" running Texas acts like Willie Neslon and david Allen Coe.
A group headed by B.J. Glasscock bought the station in ____. The country format was replaced in 1982 by Music of Your Life, a syndicated format targeting 35+ listeners, featuring music from the 30s, 40s, 50s,and a select few of the 60s and 70s. The format had been on 1270, which went Spanish in late 1982.
The station ws sold to a local club owner Mrs. Lujan (owned La Pantera club) and operated through the nineties and into the 2000s. The station was LMA'd (Local Marketing Agreement) by Border Media Partners and rebroadcst the Tejano format of 850 KJON in Carollton, Tx. The station was to have been sold to BMP, but never closed.
870 KFJZ went back to locally produced programs. 850 KJON and it's BMP sister 910 KXEB are in the process of being sold to the interests that are airing Catholic interest programs.
