[edit] History

KFDI-FM has been playing country music since about 1973. Until 2002, the KFDI calls were also on sister station 1070 AM (now KFTI "AM 1070 The Ranch"). Numerous influetial disc jockeys have worked at the stations through the years, including Cornbread (now at WIL-FM in St. Louis), Ol' Mike Oatman, Gary Hightower (now on XM Satellite Radio's Hank's Place channel 13 as "Catfish"), Terry Burford, Dugg Collins, Buddy Nichols, Orin Firesen, Scott Piper, Jerry "Attaboy" Adams and many more. Oatman, Burford and Collins are members of the Country Music Disc Jockey's Hall of Fame.

The stations were purchased by Journal Broadcast Group in 1999. Prior to that they were owned by Great Empire Broadcasting (GEB), headquartered in Wichita. GEB was owned by Mike Oatman and Mike Lynch. At its peak, GEB was the largest chain of country music stations in the United States. Other country stations in the group were KVOO-FM 98.5 and KVOO 1170 in Tulsa, WOW-FM 94.1 and WOW 590 AM in Omaha, KTTS-FM 94.7 and KTTS 1260 in Springfield, MO. All of the stations went by the "Radio Ranch" moniker and were full service country music stations. Local news, weather and traffic were emphasized. Lost pet reports were also ran on the stations.
