Kevin Dresser

Kevin Dresser is the head wrestling coach at Virginia Tech (Virginia Polytechnic Institute).

A native of Humboldt, Iowa, Dresser was a two-time high school state champion at Humboldt High School. Kevin matriculated to the University of Iowa, where in 1986 he was a NCAA national champion at 142 pounds while wrestling for the legendary wrestling icon, Dan Gable. Dresser was a two-time NCAA All-American as well as a two-time Big Ten Conference Champion. For his performance in 1986, he was given the Mike Howard Award, given to the most valuable wrestler for the Hawkeyes.

Dresser coached under Dan Gable at Iowa for several years after graduation.

Dresser decided to move east and accepted a position as head wrestling coach at Grundy high school in Grundy, Virginia. Dresser led the former southwest Virginia powerhouse to eight Virginia state titles in eight years.

Dresser decided to embark on the bigger task of building a national powerhouse team from the ground up. Dresser moved to Christiansburg, Virginia to take over the wrestling program at Christiansburg High School which was faced with an uncertain future.

Having finished his 10th year at Christiansburg High School in 2006, he had successfully built the team from scratch and took them to be state runners-up for 3 years and Virginia state champions for 5 consecutive years. During his tenure, Christiansburg High School had reached a ranking of as high as fourth in the nation.

Dresser took over as head wrestling coach for the Virginia Tech Hokies upon the departure of Tom Brands.

Dresser, widely known for his intensity and aggressive style of coaching made a name for himself coaching high school wrestling in the state of Virginia and across the nation. A native of Humboldt, Iowa, Dresser earned a bachelor of science degree in general studies from Iowa in 1986.

Dresser and his wife, Penny, have three children: Emma (8), Anna (6) and Jack (4). Penny Dresser is a native of Blacksburg and the family resides in Riner.
