[edit] Playing career

Dillon was a skilful and creative midfielder with great passing skills and excellent vision. Successes from set-pieces marked him out as an excellent striker of a dead ball. He began his career with Birmingham City as the last player to be given a debut by Sir Alf Ramsey in 1977 as a 17 year old. He joined Reading from Newcastle United in 1991 after a previous spell with Portsmouth where he made over 200 league appearances. He stayed at Elm Park for two years, playing more than 100 games before joining Stevenage, later returning to Reading as a youth coach.

[edit] Management career

Dillon was promoted to first team coach of Reading Football Club in December 2001 under the management of Alan Pardew, replacing Martin Allen helping the team gain promotion in his first season. He was previously reserve team manager and under 19s coach. He was caretaker manager from 10 September 2003 to 3 October 2003 after the resignation of Alan Pardew until Steve Coppell was appointed. He significantly aided Coppell as Reading marched to the Championship title and promotion to the Premiership during the 2005-06 season.

Dillon gained his UEFA Pro Licence in 2003[1].
