Kevin Coen

Vol. Kevin Coen (1947 – 20 January 1975), was an IRA Volunteer from Sligo who was killed in Northern Ireland by a British Solider[1][2].

Coen was born and grew up in Rusheen, Riverstown, South County Sligo in the Republic of Ireland[3][4].

He joined the Provisional Irish Republican Army and served with the Sligo Brigade. He was a political prisoner and was sent to Mountjoy Prison in Dublin during 1971[5].
At the age of 28, Coen was killed by a British Army Solider while on active service at Cassidy's Cross near Kinawley, County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland close to the Cavan/Fermanagh border on 20 January 1975. He was shot on the main Swanlinbar-Enniskillen Road by undercover British troops who lay in wait in an unmarked civilian car when they opened fire at an IRA checkpoint.[6].

The South Sligo Cumann of Sinn Fein is name in honour of Coen and there is an annual commemoration at his graveside in Sooey, County Sligo[7][8].
