Ketema Yifru

Ketema Yifru (12 December 1929 - 14 January 1994). Prominent Ethiopian diplomat and politician. Born in Gara Muleta, in Harrarge province, of a humble background, Ketema Yifru rose to the highest levels of Emperor Haile Selassie's government. Served in several ministries in the Aklilu Habte Wold government. He served longest and is remembered most for his long tenure as Foreign Minister. Ketema Yifru played an important role in the forming of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), the predecessor of today's African Union (AU). Ketema Yifru was imprisoned without charge by the Derg regime that deposed Emperor Haile Selassie in 1974, along with other officials of the Imperial government. He remained in prison for 8 years. Following his release, Ketema Yifru accepted a senior position with the United Nations agency, the World Food Program (WFP). He died on January 14, 1994 in Addis Ababa after batteling pancreatic cancer, and was buried at Holy Trinity Cathedral. He was married to Woizero Rahel Senegiorgis, and was survived by her and four sons.
