Kessenich

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kessenich is a village located in Kinrooi, in the Belgian province of Limburg. It was named after the Roman name for Castle "Cassallum", which means that it was probably founded in Roman times. This is subscribed by the fact that near the village remains of a Roman Heirweg (road for military purposes) are found. Kessenich was longtime the residence of the barons Michiels van Kessenich, who lived on an artificial hill (de Berg) in the center of the village. Many years later, they moved to the castle of Kessenich called "Borgitter".

Until the French annexation in 1795 Kessenich was one of the few imperial free cities in the Netherlands.
