I have moved the Meritorious Service Medal page to Meritorious Service Decoration, which has then been changed to Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada). Intially, we only had the medal, but later the Cross, a higher decoration, was added. The page refers to both which together are properly described by the new page title. I hope this is ok, it seems correct to me. When I click on What Links Here, I see several pages that come up. Is it the right thing to do to go to each and edit them to lead to the new page or should it just be left for the redirection function to take care of? kgw 21:08, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi I guess you mean you moved Meritorious Service Medal (Canada). Ideally you would go to the pages linking to it and update them to point to the real page rather than the redirect. This might mean that the text in the linging page changes which may not be what is intended (depening on context), so you might need to make the links something like [[Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada)|Meritorious Service Medal]] which would show up as Meritorious Service Medal. --pgk(talk) 21:17, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

OK, I understand that, but now I may have messed up here. I am trying to add a category to useon the page I have done for Jill Sampson. What I wanted to do is make a category link like the one for recipients of the Order of Canada. Such a list would be a useful reference and add recognition to the decoration by creating a list of these recipients. But when I tried to do it, I think I have messed up. The page Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada) only shows up as a preview even though it shows the links to Jill Sampson and Julian Armour These show up because I have edited those two pages to refer to this category. Yet the category shows up in red when it is referred to. Am I on the wrong track? kgw 21:57, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

I fixed it for you. You have to add content to the category page for it to work. I added a brief description on the category page, saved it, and thus, voila, blue link. Feel free to ask if you need more help. Pepsidrinka 22:06, 15 April 2006 (UTC)
An added note: to link to a category, just write a colon followed by the category page, and enclose it in wikilinks. For example, [[:Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada)]] will appear as Category:Meritorious Service Decoration (Canada). If you leave out the colon, it will instead categorize the page instead of inserting a link to the category. Pepsidrinka 22:10, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I see what you mean. Thanks for the message. I believe, though, that you should make it a bit more clear in the article why this is being included and where the controversy falls in, because otherwise, it could easily be missed, or that sentence may be viewed as random spam...Just my thoughts, anyway... Ken -- Merope might not get back to you right away; she's taking a bit of a break from Wikipedia. If I'm thinking of the same John Turvey you are, he seems like he might be notable enough for Wikipedia. The standards are described here: WP:BIO.

When you create the page initially, be sure to make it clear why he is notable enough (WP:N) for a biography on Wikipedia.

Also, while you're adding to the article, you can include the tag {{stub}} to make it clear that it's incomplete.

It can also help to temporarily include the tag {{wip}} to indicate that the article is a work in process...but that's only intended to be used for a very brief period, no more than an hour or so. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 04:07, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I see no problem with notability; refer to WP:BIO for the guidelines. See the Order of Canada and Order of BC bios for background information, and if you google his name, you should find plenty of press coverage. I haven't turned on the TV or radio, or looked at any news sites today, so I hadn't realized he died. You've done a great job on the article. I found this CBC obituary as well.

[edit] Followup about Wikipedia deletion policy

Ken, I thought you might be interested in this New York Times article:

"Roughly 4,000 articles are added each day, and about half that number are deleted that same day, Wikipedia says, by administrators who determine that an article is not up to standards."

With that volume of new articles, we end up having to make a snap judgement: does the article describe a person who seems to be notable enough to justify a Wikipedia bio? We honestly try to make the right choice each time; we don't want to delete valid content any more than we want to keep junk. If you just started the first version of the article as a minimal framework, with no indication why this person might be notable, then the deletion is understandable. (I really don't know; I didn't see the article.) Anyway, thanks for taking the time to add it. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 15:49, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

The New York Times is one of the best possible sources to cite; it helps to demonstrate more than local/regional notability. If it just requires the free registration, that's not a major problem. If it requires a TimesSelect (paid) registration, it's a bit more problematical. But if the piece adds context, then it's probably useful.
Ok, I just did the search...is this the article you were thinking of? That seems like a good citation to show that he was the driving force behind one of the first needle exchange programs in North America. -- Jim Douglas (talk) (contribs) 16:30, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

Great work on the Cougar Annie article! I bought the book after a visit to Cougar Annie's in the 90's. She was long gone of course, and the house & gardens were in disrepair. I have a few pictures of Cougar Annie's house at the time that I'll upload when I find a scanner. I believe her house has now been torn down, but I did have a chance to wander inside at the time. Lots of canned goods still on shelf. Can't say for certain whether any were labelled "cougar", but who knows? Paper ripper 1968 04:35, 3 November 2006 (UTC)

I've just completed transcribing all passages from one of my own sources on Martin, J. Morton's In the Sea of Sterile Mountains, on a sandbox page at User talk:Skookum1/BC&PacificNorthwestHistory/Resources It doesn't have the particular passage on the Martin regime's session of parliament, such as it was, so I must have something else around here because, if it was maybe in a newspaper history column, I think I must have saved it; I think it was in another book though, I just can't remember which for now; but there's plenty in Morton to dig your teeth into (including the tidbit that Martin was the first person ever to be treated with insulin).Skookum1 22:11, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi KenWalker.
Not only was the article I created tagged with speedy deletion; it was deleted! I don't work for the company, nor do I want to; however I do have interests in many things related to engineering geology. I don't believe this was advertising the company, as I was clearly starting an article with its founders, etc. This is no more of an advertisement than AMEC and other articles, and I take offense that you have done this. Please look at the contributions before deciding if that person was starting an article that was "clearly written to promote a company".
