The Kenwood High School is a public high school located in Essex, Baltimore County, Maryland. Kenwood has been servicing Baltimore County since 1932. The school was originally housed at 6700 Kenwood Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21237, which now is the Golden Ring Middle School [1]. The school was relocated to a larger building at 501 Stemmers Run Road. The school houses approximately 1800 students, pulling from all across the county thanks to two magnet programs (International Baccalaureate, Sports Science Academy).

[edit] Magnet Programs

While the school provides a standard diploma to graduates, there are also "Magnet programs," which are, "theme-oriented courses of study that provide students with in-depth experiences in a specialized area of interest." Kenwood features two "magnets": International Baccalaureate and Sports Science Academy.

The "IB" program is recognized in more than 100 countries, welcoming students to a world of academic leadership and international opportunities. The courses offered in this program are competitive and challenging and encourage creative and critical thinking skills. The IB Program is unique in that it prepares students to take exit exams their senior to earn college credit.

"SSA" provides students with the opportunity to pursue an interdiscplinary curriculum that investigates careers in the sports, health, and fitness fields, including Sports Medicine, Sports Education, Sports Business and Sports Communications.

Besides the "Magnets," Kenwood features other programs, such as: AVID, Maryland's Tomorrow, JROTC, and Career Pathways. These programs provide opportunities to students, allowing them to focus on their after-high school careers.

Kenwood has a long and diverse athletic history. The school is known for repeated success in wrestling and competitive cheerleading, as well as state championships in Baseball (1978) and Boys Soccer (2003). The school has, of late, also been extremely competitive in Girls Soccer, managed by Derek Woodward (2003 Baltimore Sun City/County Coach of the Year).

Kenwood's long history has provided for many thousands of alumnus. Perhaps the two most notable are Baltimore Sun sports columnist Mike Preston, and astronaut Thomas David Jones.
