Kentucky Route 686 is also known as the Mt. Sterling bypass that travels from Kentucky Route 11 and U.S. Highway 460 north of the city and goes counter-clockwise, ending at U.S. Highway 60. The western portion of the bypass, at 3.506 miles from U.S. Highway 460 south of the city to U.S. Highway 460 north of the city was completed in late 1985 as a four-lane highway. East of U.S. Highway 460 to U.S. Highway 60, it is a 2.827 mile two-lane highway on a four-lane right-of-way and was completed in the early 2000's.
