Kentish Town station is a London Underground and National Rail station in the London Borough of Camden in Travelcard Zone 2.
The National Rail platforms serve First Capital Connect trains, between West Hampstead and King's Cross Thameslink. They were built by the Midland Railway in 1868 when it built its extension to St. Pancras.
Until the latter was built, and for some time afterwards, trains would proceed to Moorgate Street, the locomotive being exchanged at Kentish Town with one fitted with condensing apparatus. For a number of years daily trains would run from Kentish Town to Victoria on the South Eastern and Chatham Railway.
The longest non-stop run until 1868 was run in that year from Leicester - 97½ miles in two hours and fourteen minutes. North of the station was the second largest mpd and repair facility on the Midland. The mainline station was rebuilt in 1983.
The London Underground platforms are on the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line, between Tufnell Park and Camden Town. On the Northern Line, the location of the now-closed South Kentish Town tube station is between Kentish Town and Camden Town and may still be observed where the tunnel opens out into the old station.
Kentish Town underground has the distinctive Leslie Green designed Edwardian red tiling used on most of the original Northern, Piccadilly and Bakerloo Line stations.
Kentish Town station is one of many in this area of London to have a corresponding underground station on the (fictional) North London System in the novel The Horn of Mortal Danger (1980).
