The righthander Carlsson reached his highest singles ATP-ranking on September 19, 1988, when he became the World Number 6. He was a baseline player known for hitting high-arcing groundstrokes with excessive topspin on both his forehand and his two-handed backhand. Both because of that playing style and because of chronic knee problems, he played almost exclusively on clay courts.
