IMDb profile |
Kenny vs. Spenny is a Canadian comedy reality TV series about two best friends, Kenneth "Kenny" Hotz and Spencer "Spenny" Rice, who face each other constantly to achieve glory in defeating one another at different competitions arranged by both at the beginning, commonly one per episode. The loser of the episode must perform an act of humiliation, usually selected by the winner, which can be seen at the end of each episode. Kenny and Spenny created the series and Kenny is also director and executive producer.
The show originally aired on the CBC, but has been moved to the cable television network Showcase since the fall of 2005, although re-runs of the episodes can still be seen on CBC during the late night hours. It was previously seen on GSN in the United States, but continues to air internationally on TV6 in Sweden, Challenge in United Kingdom, The Comedy Channel in Australia, Sic Radical in Portugal and The XtraHOT channel in Israel. Fox Entertainment Group in Latin America has also distributed the episodes and can be seen on the Latin American versions of FOX channel and FX. The series was nominated for a Gemini Award in 2005 and 2006 as the best Canadian comedy series, and has recently received a Rose d'Or nomination in Switzerland for "best international comedy series". Kenny vs. Spenny is also the largest selling format series in Canadian history.
The show has spawned a British version of the show from Sky One called Ed vs. Spencer. Now shown on BBC America, it features two different friends in similar competitions. There is also a German version of the show, called Elton vs. Simon, featuring two German comedians and friends who compete in the same vein like Kenny and Spenny.

[edit] Premise
Each typical episode is based on a competition statement which states the goal that the competition will determine. The competition rules are agreed upon by the two roommates, and there is typically a method of judgement or refereeing involved in order to distinguish a definite loser and winner. The detail of these rules and conditions has increased in response to the competitors continued attempts to find loopholes within the rules. The shows are not scripted, and the cast and crew are often seen and talked to. The competetors' personal lives are often brought into the competitions, including their families and friends. The winner of the competition gets to assign a "humiliation" (any task they choose) that the loser must perform.
The main entertainment elements of the series are the comical and irregular competitions, and the contrast in personality between Kenny and Spenny. This contrast usually impacts the way each approaches the competitions. Kenny's approach is typically more unorthodox, and often includes a willingness to use whatever means necessary — including cheating — to win. Although he doesn't always break the rules he and Spenny agree to at the beginning, he is always willing to bend the rules, and usually ends up performing the tasks assigned in a unique way. Kenny sometimes admits to the belief that he cannot win certain competition if they go through and attempts to cause Spenny to fortfeit.
On the other hand, Spenny almost always sticks very strictly to both the rules of the competition and his own ethics, often sticking not only to the letter of the rules, but what he perceives as the intention and spirit of the competition statement. He rarely attempts to break the rules, but still occasionally finds loopholes to help him win. Spenny will often bear the brunt of Kenny's plans and pranks. Spenny is often paranoid and sometimes this causes him to sabotage his own efforts. Additionally, Kenny occasionally uses the paranoia to his advantage.
The focus of the show is often less focused on who will actually win the competition, and more on how each competitor will go about trying to win. This is evidenced by the fact that the person who performs the humiliation is not always technically the loser based on the rules agreed upon - they just don't know about the rules broken by the winner. On several occasions, Kenny has cheated and still been declared the winner, since apparently, unless stated in the opening rules, the loser does not get to check the tape of what their opponent did. The show also rarely shows the aftermath of the competition, often leaving viewers to wonder how a competitor reacted upon finding out that his opponent cheated.
Kenny has also occasionally used his position as executive producer to threaten crew members and force them to help him and/or not help Spenny. Kenny sometimes seems to have more control over competitions because of his position. It could also be said that the show (particularly early in its run) is often edited to make Kenny look like the hero of the show while making Spenny look bad. In the same vein, the show tends to glorify cheating over following the spirit and rules of a competition. Both of these factors seem to result from Kenny's getting more screentime than Spenny in many episodes as a sort of narrator.
