Kennecott Land, a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group, is a land development company based in Murray, Utah, that was formed in 2001. Kennecott Land owns 93,000 acres of undeveloped land in Salt Lake and Tooele counties in the state, 75,000 acres of which are located in Salt Lake County. The company has lucrative and ambitious plans to settle nearly all of the undeveloped land in the western Salt Lake Valley within the next 75 years.
The first major development, the Daybreak Community, has already begun construction in the western half of the city of South Jordan. It will be an environmentally-friendly, high-tech community centered around the 85-acre manmade Oquirrh Lake. It will feature 13,600 residential units by the year 2020 and could double the population of South Jordan.
Kennecott Land has also recently unveiled its master plan for the development of the west bench of the Salt Lake Valley. It will feature two major urban centers of development. One of the urban centers will be the Daybreak Community, while the other will be located to the west of Magna along SR-201 and I-80. In addition to these two major urban centers, smaller urban centers will be located within easy reach of neighborhoods, with community centers, schools, churches, and recreational options available to create more integrated, and easily accessible neighborhoods. Businesses will generally be scattered among the residential areas, while transit options, such as the proposed Mountain View Corridor, TRAX (the local light rail system), and Utah Transit Authority's bus and future BRT systems, will play an important part in the development of these communities. The neighborhoods will feature a wide variety of home types and neighborhoods. Very few homes will be far from extensive recreational, business, and mass transit options. A university campus and a ski resort named Soldier Flats is also expected to be constructed in the Oquirrh Mountains, which have traditionally been thought to be too steep for ski resorts.
