Kenema District

Kenema District is a district in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. It is named for it's capital, Kenema, which is also the capital of the province and the third biggest city in the country. It borders Tonkolili District and Kono District to the north, Kailahun District to the east, Pujehun District to the southwest, Liberia to the south and Bo District to the east. The total area is 6,053 Km Sq. The primary ethnic groups in the district are the Temne and Mende. Kenema has a mixed economy, made up of gold and diamond mining as well as agricultural production of coffee, cacao and rice. Since the emergence of the Second Liberian Civil War in 1999, the Kenema District along with Bo District served as the primary center for Liberian refugees with around 60,000 in the area at its height.
