KELO is the CBS affiliate in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, broadcasting on NTSC Channel 11 (analog) and ATSC Channel 32 (digital). South Dakotans pronounce the station as "Kelo," as if it rhymes with "hello." Its transmitter is located near Rowena, South Dakota.
[edit] Station history
KELO signed on air on May 19, 1953 as South Dakota's first television station. By 1954, KELO was primarily affiliated with the NBC network, but it also carried programs from ABC, CBS and DuMont.
Since the 1960s, it has been solely a CBS affiliate (and the only station in Sioux Falls to never change its affiliation), although it currently operates a MyNetworkTV affiliate, called "my UTV", on a digital subchannel.
KELO was home to Captain 11, a popular children's show in the area, from 1955 until 1996.
[edit] Timeline
- May 19, 1953: KELO signed on as the first television station in South Dakota.
- September 24, 1955: KELO's first satellite station, Florence's KDLO, signs on.
- July 15, 1957: Reliance's KPLO signs on.
- September 23, 1968: Became South Dakota's first all-color TV station.
- November, 1989: KCLO signs on as KBLO.
- May 31, 1996: Acquired by Young Broadcasting.
[edit] Coverage area / rebroadcasters
KELO serves the largest viewing area of any station in the United States. It calls this vast area —which consists all of South Dakota as well as large parts of North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa—"KELOLAND", and covers it with a network of rebroadcasters:
- KDLO-TV (Channel 3 / Digital 2) Florence/Watertown
- KPLO-TV (Channel 6 / Digital 14) Reliance/Pierre
- KCLO-TV (Channel 15 / Digital 16) Rapid City (does not offer my UTV on digital)
The programming of KELO-TV is also rebroadcast on the following translator stations:
- K24DT (Channel 24) Aberdeen
- K28DP (Channel 28) Custer
- K57BX (Channel 57) Lake Andes
A unique feature of KELO's coverage area is that it includes two time zones -- Central and Mountain. This means that viewers of Rapid City's KCLO watch CBS's prime-time schedule from 6PM to 9PM (instead of 7PM to 10PM), with The Late Show with David Letterman at 9:35PM MT.
KCLO, because it is in a separate market, also gets certain shows fed to it specifically. KELO by contrast can not feed things like my UTV, or any other programming that may already be shown in the market, to Rapid City. All 4 KELO stations do get separate advertising as needed.
[edit] my UTV
my UTV is carried on a digital subchannel of KELO (channel 11.2 or 32.2) and rebroadcasted on digital subchannels of KDLO (channel 3.2 or 2.2) and KPLO (channel 6.2 or 14.2), though not KCLO due to FCC market rules. It's currently affiliated with MyNetworkTV. It was formerly a UPN affiliate branded simply as "UTV". UTV is generally carried on cable channel 10. The UPN affiliate in Rapid City was KCPL-LP 52, and the MyNetworkTV affiliate for Rapid City is KKRA-LP 24, so UTV still can not be carried on KCLO by FCC market rules. The CW affiliate for Sioux Falls is KWSD 36 and in Rapid City it's KWBH-LP 27.
[edit] Weather coverage
- In 1997 the station group Installed 2 live Doppler Radars in Huron,SD and Beresford,SD. In 2001 they installed another doppler radar in Wall, SD. KELOLAND is the only station in South Dakota to own and operate a network of live doppler radars.
- The station group st also has a network of Weather Net sites which are updated every 3 seconds.
