Keigo Asano (浅野 啓吾 Asano Keigo?) is a character in the anime and manga series Bleach.

[edit] Character outline

Keigo is a student at the Karakura High School, in the same class as Ichigo Kurosaki. He is a typically goofy and extremely hyper-active character, often using overly-dramatic movements and words to act out his feelings; otherwise, he is the stereotypical Japanese teenager: he enjoys watching fireworks, playing RPGs, going to beach parties, etc. Originally little more than fodder for comic relief, Keigo underwent some character development later in the series.

[edit] Personality

A good-natured fellow, Keigo is used mainly for comical effect, usually in situations involving failed attempts to woo girls and interacting with Ichigo. He is good friends with another student, Mizuiro Kōjima, whose calm, innocent demeanor and success with women acts as a foil to his impulsive, wannabe personality. Strangely enough, a classmate of Ichigo's sisters, Midoriko, has a crush on him. Apparently, she likes how "he always has a little smile, even when he's alone."[1]

Keigo appears to be a shallow character at first glance, with a passion for slacking off. Indeed, he takes great pride in not making it to the honors roster (that is, higher than the 50th ranking), and labels those who do so 'traitors' (including Ichigo and Chad who made the 23rd and 11th ranks, respectively). However, Mizuiro states that he is much smarter than his bad grades show.[2] Keigo is also a quick learner: He successfully blocks Rangiku Matsumoto's kick after being attacked by her just once. Unfortunately, he gets kicked in the face again while bragging about it.[3]

[edit] Character development

After the Soul Society arc, Keigo's role in the series has undergone some change. When Grimmjow Jaggerjack leads a group of arrancar to the human world on a quest to exterminate any human holding spiritual energies, Keigo becomes an unwilling host to Ikkaku Madarame and Yumichika Ayasegawa after striking a deal to provide accommodation for them in exchange for his own safety. Fortunately, his sister Mizuho happily welcomes the new lodgers, if only because she loves Ikkaku's bald head.

[edit] Hueco Mundo arc

After Ikkaku, Yumichika and the other Shinigami are recalled to Soul Society, and Inoue captured by Aizen, Keigo, Tatsuki and Mizuiro witness Ichigo, Chad and Ishida depart to Hueco Mundo in an attempt to rescue Orihime. They are then greeted by Urahara, who says that while Ichigo leaves to do his part, it is time for him (Urahara) to do his.

[edit] Family

The Asano family consists of Keigo's mother, father, sister Mizuho, and Keigo himself. Like Tatsuki, he is unusual in that he lives with both of his parents, unlike many other recurring characters in the series.

[edit] Powers

Keigo possesses an inordinate amount of spiritual energy as a result of constant contact with Ichigo, and can consequently see Hollows and Shinigami. However, like Tatsuki and Mizuiro, his energy has yet to manifest itself in the form of any special abilities.

In the manga, Keigo's spiritual powers are first seen when he spots a hollow flying around immediately preceding the arrival of Grimmjow Jaggerjack's group of arrancar.[4] He then bumps into Zennosuke Kurumadani, and witnesses Ikkaku Madarame's fight with Edorad Leones.

In the anime, he sees a shinigami on a rooftop and starts talking to him, and sees Rukia in Soul Society drag. Later, he is attacked by the bitto, who begin to suck out his spiritual energy. They are warded off by Ichigo; it is later revealed that he can see Ichigo's shinigami form. However, Koga Gowa, the Bount who attacks Ichigo, surmises that Keigo can only see him because most of his soul has left him. However, this appears to be incorrect, because he can also see Zennosuke Kurumadani earlier in the anime.
