[edit] Kedar in Hinduism
Kedar is an another name for Lord Shiva, one of the three major gods of Hindu religion, the other two being Brahma and Vishnu. There is a temple to Kedar in the northern part of India. Kedar or Shiva is considered to be unique among the gods owing to the fact that he is the god not only of human race but demons and spirits worship him equally unlike Brahma and Bishnu.
[edit] Biblical Kedar
Kedar is a son of Ishmael mentioned in the Bible. The name also referred to the settlement in the Syrian Desert named after him.
GEN 17:20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.
(Gen 25:13-18) "And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and KEDAR, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, {14} And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, {15} Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: {16} These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names, by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. {17} And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. {18} And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren."
(Song 1:5-6) "I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of KEDAR, as the curtains of Solomon. {6} Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept."
(Ezek 27:21) "Arabia and all the princes of KEDAR were your customers; they did business with you in lambs, rams and goats."
(Psalms 120:5) "Woe is me, that I sojourn in Mesech, that I dwell in the tents of Kedar!"
Classical Arab historians sometimes name Kedar as an ancestor of Muhammad although another tradition names Nebaioth, another son of Ishmael, as his ancestor.
