From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
KDVS is a freeform, 9,200 watt, community radio station in Davis, California. It is volunteer-run nonprofit station situated on the University of California, Davis campus. KDVS broadcasts its FM signal at a frequency of 90.3 MHz. KDVS is also available worldwide through MP3 and RealPlayer streaming on its website KDVS.org.
The station began operations on February 1, 1964 from the laundry room of the all-male dormitory Beckett Hall, running on carrier-current AM broadcast. The station soon gained a reputation by airing interviews with Angela Davis and a live call-in show with then California Governor Ronald Reagan in 1969. In the last few decades, it has found a permanent home in the basement of UC Davis's Freeborn Hall, giving it room for its ever-increasing music collection and equipment.
The station is believed to have the second or third largest collection of vinyl in California. The first is popularly held to be the private collection of Dr. Demento.
DJ Shadow, Blackalicious, Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate, and Mario Andreoni of !!! all began as a DJs on KDVS.
A free newsletter entitled KDViationS, written and composed by the volunteer staff of the radio station, is published quarterly. It too can be found on the KDVS website.
