[edit] Summary

A simulation of the monocular polyopia (visual ghosting) and streaking artifacts that are characteristic of keratoconus.

The left hand image shows the letter A as viewed with normal vision, and the right as affected by the irregular cone-shaped cornea of keratoconus. It is not possible to precisely represent a scene as viewed by a keratoconic patient; no two individuals ever see precisely the same effects, and the multiple image field is prone to change over time. The above is asserted to be a reasonable illustration of the author's own condition when uncorrected.

"Mere double vision is not complained of, but a candle, when looked at, appears like a number of lights, confusedly running into one another, but without coloured fringes, or other phenomena of chromatic aberration." — John Nottingham, Practical observations on conical cornea, 1854.
