Kaunakakai is a census-designated place (CDP) in Maui County, Hawaiʻi, United States. It is the largest town on the island of Molokaʻi. The population was 2,726 at the 2000 census. It is "twinned" with Embo in Scotland.

Kaunakakai is located at 21°5′20″N, 157°0′45″W (21.088968, -157.012542)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.1 km² (3.1 mi²). 5.3 km² (2.0 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it (34.94%) is water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 2,726 people, 867 households, and 645 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 518.5/km² (1,342.7/mi²). There were 962 housing units at an average density of 183.0/km² (473.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 8.62% White, 0.04% African American, 0.15% Native American, 28.76% Asian, 30.67% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 31.58% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.58% of the population.

There were 867 households out of which 35.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.6% were non-families. 22.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.13 and the average family size was 3.66.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $34,492, and the median income for a family was $39,348. Males had a median income of $30,543 versus $22,337 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,201. About 15.5% of families and 20.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.4% of those under age 18 and 11.8% of those age 65 or over.
