Der Name stammt vom Kastner (auch Rentmeister) her, der seit dem 13 c. für einen Amtsbezirk bestellt wurde und der mit der Aufsicht und Verwaltung des fürstlichen Kammerguts beauftragt war, insbesondere hinsichtlich des Kastens und des Speichers, wo die Abgaben der Untertanen zusammenflossen.
