Q. Did Karen Pryor graduated from any of the universities listed? I've noticed that she never uses a degree right next to her name. Does she hold any degree?

A. Karen Pryor is a scientist without the union card. She has a BA in English literature from Cornell. While her children were small she was a part-time graduate student in marine zoology at the University of Hawaii, but did not seek a degree. She did graduate work in the biology department at New York University, and a Ph.D. candidate in the zoology department at Rutgers University in Newark for three years. In all three schools, course work that filled her research needs was the primary goal, rather than a degree. Her Ph.D. thesis research was published in a U.S. Government report, Social behavior and school structure in spinner and spotter porpoises (Stenella attenuata and S. longirostris) during purse seining for tuna, in 1980, followed by several smaller papers in the peer reviewed literature. Family responsibilities precluded meeting Rutgers on-campus teaching assistant requirements for completion of a degree. Beginning in 1967 Pryor has published numerous research papers in the peer-reviewed literature; been principal investigator in government-sponsored research projects, and presented graduate seminars at many universities in a number of disciplines.
