Kartha is derived from Karthavu which means Lord in Malayalam language. This was initially a title given by Rajahs to high nobles and feudal Lords in Kerala. Later it became a hereditary status and turned into a subcaste that was among the highest in the Nair community like Menon, Kaimal, Pillai, Nambiar etc.

It is also a title used by the Raghuvamshi clan of the Marathas who were ruling from Ayodhya, the other surnames being Sure,Randheer etc.
