Karel Domin

Karel Domin (May 4, 1882 in Kutná Hora - June 10, 1953 in Prague) was Czech botanist and politician.
After gymnasium study in Příbram he studied botanics at the Charles University in Prague (habilitation in 1906). In 1916 he was named as professor of botanics. Domin specialised on fytogeography, geobotanics and plants taxonomy. He became member of Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, published many scientific works and founded botanic institute at the university.
His political career was unfortunate - in 1934 he initiated struggle for ancient academic insignia between Czech and German Prague universities (insigniády), resulting in street-fights and looting. During 1935-39 he was member of parliament, after Munich Agreement he co-founded semi-fascist political movement (Akce národní obrody).
