[edit] College History

Kardinia International College was founded by Yoshimaro Katsumata who purchased Morongo's buildings, grounds, facilities and resources in mid-1995. It first opened in 1996 with 31 secondary students and 42 kindergarten children. This would grow to around 1500 students by 2006.

The college offers a Junior School split into two sections - the Early Learning Centre and the Upper Primary Centre - as well as a Senior School.

[edit] Early Learning Centre

The Early Learning Centre (or ELC) incorporates a three and four year old kindergarten; and prep, grade one and grade two classes.

[edit] Middle Primary Centre

The Middle Primary Centre has grades three and four.

[edit] Upper Primary Centre

The Upper Primary Centre has grades five and six.

[edit] Senior School

The Senior School utilises a vertical curriculum for years seven to ten. This means that the student is not restricted to undertaking classes in their year level, but can move to higher levels if it is felt to be beneficial.

For years 11 and 12, there are two options to undertake. The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) was first implemented in 2000, and is the main high school certificate for year 11 and 12 students in Victoria. In 2005, Kardinia offered the alternative of the International Baccalaureate Diploma. The school also implemented the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program into the junior school.

[edit] Technology in Learning

All senior school students and teachers are required to own notebook computers (the money for which comes out of their own pockets). The hardware supplied to students and teachers over the years has come from Toshiba (1996-97, 1999-02, 2007-), Compaq (1998) and Acer (2003-06). The current supplier, once again, is Toshiba with the 2007 model being the Tecra M5. Kardinia's entire campus is equipped with a 802.11b/g network so students can connect to the internet anywhere at school. It utilises both wireless and cable connectivity. Many classrooms also have projectors to maximize the learning environment during class. Hardware such as video and digital cameras, as well as online textbooks and database subscriptions, have been progressively made available to students. The success of the initiative is being studied by the district's Technology Advisory Task Force, comprised primarily of community volunteers employed in various areas of information technology.

[edit] Kardinia Motto

The college motto is Wisdom leads to Respect and Friendship. It is said to be the foundation for a world of harmony, peace and understanding. The Kardinia curriculum is the foundation for preparing the college's students to be leaders in the world of the 21st century.

[edit] The Word "Kardinia"

Kardinia is an Aboriginal word which translates to sunrise or new beginning. The college was named after this because it was felt that the world was appropriate for the fresh start being made by the college.

[edit] Houses

Karidina International College has four houses to which the students are allocated. Each has a significant historical meaning.

  • Cowie House was named after the first squatter to settle on the college site. The house colour is green.
  • Gotemba House was named after the city from which the college founder comes. Gotemba is a city at the foot of Mt. Fuji, Japan. The house colour is blue.
  • Morongo House was named after the historic homestead originally built on the site in 1859. The house colour is red.
  • Thomson House is named after the first mayor of Geelong who originally brought the name Kardinia to the region. The house colour is yellow/gold.

[edit] College Song

The College Song is entitled Bridges To The Future, and was composed by Debbie Howard.

Bridges to the future, are what we plan to build,
Reaching for tomorrow, not dwelling on the past.
Hand in hand and side by side we will strive to do our best,
Excellence in all we do, we won't settle for any less.

Chorus
Wisdom leads to respect
And respect leads to friendship
With the world
(repeat)

Believing in ourselves and what we can achieve,
Honesty and effort will lead us to succeed.
Studying together we will learn from those who teach,
As faithfully we work towards the fulfilment of our dreams.

Chorus

Respecting other people and learning of their ways,
Extending hands of friendship across the ocean and the seas.
Caring for each other, regardless of our race,
Building bridges of friendship - that all children may embrace.

Chorus

[edit] Controversy

  • Several students were reported to have been involved in the creation and distribution of a controversial DVD first seen in the media in October 2006. One student was expelled, with at least two other students having "some involvement" according to the school's principal.[1]
  • Former music teacher Nicholas Frampton, 25, was struck off the Victorian teachers register for having illicit online conversations with year 8 students in 2004[2]. College principal Mr. John Goodfellow previously told students and parents that Mr Frampton had left the college in early 2005 due to poor health. Frampton was immediately fired by the college after his actions were reported by a VCE student, but was subsequently re-hired at another school and continued with similar actions, leading to his eventual dismissal from the teachers register.
  • Drugs are considered a problem throughout the school. Despite enforcing a zero tolerance policy, many students still get away with using and selling drugs. Four students were expelled in 2005 over marijuana accusations. Without proof of what students had or hadn't done the children were dismissed, having no opportunity to refute the claims or prove themselves innocent. One student with similar accusations against them remains a student at the school because he has 'learning disabilities'.
  • Former Physical Education teacher Andrew King is known to have slept with a student in 2004 on the night of her graduation. He was immediately fired from his position, with students and the college community told he was 'pursuing other business interests'. However, the teacher and student are now engaged to be married.
