Kappa Pi Alpha

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kappa Pi Alpha (KΠA) is an honor/social fraternity at Bentley College. Founded on February 6, 1922 it is the oldest fraternity on campus.

Founded on February 6, 1922 with five charter members, KAPPA PI ALPHA currently has some 48 brothers and numerous alumni. This alumni organization has been inactive in the past, but recently this situation has been corrected.

The charter members were five close friends of the class 1922 (H.J. Grady, A.C. Fohner, R.H. Miller, G.O. Staneart, and W.M. Vinton) who wrote the formal ritual and influenced fifteen other mutual friends to join them as brothers.

In 1942, the group was discontinued and not until some time after the war, 1949 to be exact, was the interest apparent in revitalizing KPA. At the time, two students of the class of '50, Ted Tseckares and Bob Ganley, approached Professor Sinclair for help in reactivating the fraternity. Both fellows had brothers who were past brothers of KPA; hence the interest.

Despite the fact that all the records, including initiation ritual, had been lost during the war years, the cooperation and assistance of the alumni resulted in the rewriting of the ritual and the replacement of essential documents. During the 1949-1950 school year, forty students were initiated into the brotherhood.

The fraternity occupied several houses prior to 1942, and not until May 1, 1997 we obtained a house. The 10 brothers who founded this house were: Jeff Auerbach, John Broderick, Ed Bush, Rich Cawthorne, Mark DeCourcy, Dave Dubois, John Labelle, Dino LaPlagia, Joe Savarese, and Jed Whitney.

Shortly after its reactivation, KPA presented a scholastic trophy to the college. This trophy has engraved on it the name of the two students (at the time one from both the Day and Evening divisions) with the highest scholastic average while at Bentley.
