Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is a four year co-educational secondary school operated by the Catholic Diocese of Wichita. It is located in the eastern half of Wichita, Kansas, and primarily serves students residing in the eastern section of Sedgwick County and western section of Butler County.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is dedicated to the education and formation of the total person in the image of Jesus Christ.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel was established in 1971 as the result of the merger of Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School and Mount Carmel Academy. Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School was named after Chaplain Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Wichita Diocese who served and died in the Korean War. It opened in 1956 and was operated by the Jesuits as a preparatory school for young men. Jesuits served at the school in various capacities until the early 1990's. The Sisters of Charity of the BVM (Blessed Virgin Mary) established Mount Carmel Academy in 1887 in west Wichita as a girl's boarding school. In 1961, it moved to the current site in east Wichita. The BVM's served the school until the early 1990's.

Currently, the school is served by 59 faculty memebers and an 18 member support staff for a total of 77 employees. The faculty includes one Sister of the Immaculate Heart of Mary who teaches full time in the Theology Department. A full time priest teaches, serves as Chaplain, and provide sacramental ministries to the students. All students must take Theology classes each semester and are exposed to numerous opportunities for fully intergrating their academic and spiritual experiences.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the State of Kansas, and the National Catholic Education Association. Institutional membership is held in the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and many other professional organizations.

883 Students in Grades 9-12 (2006-2007) Students take a placement examination in eighth grade prior to enrollment. Kapaun Mt. Carmel admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel currently has the most Kansas state championships in football, wrestling, and golf as well as holding the only two grand state championships in Kansas.

Classes meet for 90 minutes on an A/B day schedule. On the A-Day schedule, classes 1,2,3, and 4, meet. On the B-Day schedule, classes, 5,6,7, and 8, meet. One week of the schedule is A,B,A,B,A. The next week it is B,A,B,A,B. Classes meet 18 weeks per semester.

English, World Language, (French, Latin and Spanish), Mathematics, Social Science, Science, Theology, Fine and Graphic Arts, Vocal Music, Business, Home Economics, Speech, Debate, Computer Science and Phsycial Education make up the KMC Curriculum. The Saint Gianna Catholic Health Care Academy, off-site, is available for students wishing to pursue careers in the medical fields.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School requires that all students successfully complete all required courses incluing those in the Theology Department. Twenty-eight Carnegie units are required for graduation incluing:

  • 4 units English (Exclusive of Oral Communication classes)
  • 4 units Theology
  • 3 units Social Sciences (including 1.5 units of American History, .5 units American Government, and 1 unit of World History
  • 3 units Natural Science (including 1 lab course)
  • 1 unit Physical Education
  • 1 unit Computer Science
  • 1 unit World Language
  • 1 unit Fines Arts
  • .5 units Communications (for those students of Class of 2008 and beyond is required)

All Honors courses are designated on the student's transcript by the letter "H". Advanced Placement courses have the letters "AP" on transcripts.

In 2006, 110 AP tests were administered to KMC students. Ninety-two scored 3 or higher.

Admission professionals from post-secondary insitutions are welcome to visit with students on our campus. Appointments may be scheduled on any weekday between 11:15 a.m. and 1:20 p.m. by contacting the Registar in the Counseling Department.

[edit] School Constructions

As of November 2006, Kapaun Mt. Carmel is constructing a $2-3 million dollars expansion. Phase IIA is building the new restroom, expand art and debate room and new teacher lounges and new student commons. Phase IIB is currently under fund-raising until next Fall 2007. Phase IIB is a new 2,500+ seats gym and new boys and girls lockeroom and new weights room. And it will immediately start construction after Phase IIB completed its $5-7 million dollars fund-raising.
