Kapatiran Arnis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kapatiran Arnis was formed officially in February 2001 after many months of consideration by 8th Degree Tuhon John Harvey and his instructors from the ashes of Rapid Arnis which he formed in 1993 from a blend of LaPunti Arnis de Abanico, Balintawak, Serrada and Doce Pares.

With the guidance of probably the most experienced and respected eskrimador in Britain, John Harvey, Kapatiran Arnis drives the expansion of Filipino martial arts both in Britain and internationally, providing numerous British, European and World champions.

This style uses aspects from Espada y daga, Solo baston, Mano y Mano and many other aspects of Filipino martial arts (FMA) as well as other systems using a "take whatever works" attitude. It is well known not only for its high success rate in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation (WEKAF) arena, but also for its effectiveness in reality, put to the test in the smaller, unarmoured Black Eagle (FMA) events attended by those wishing to test their skills in a more realistic environment.

[edit] Black Eagle

Black Eagle events are gatherings where traditional and non-traditional Arnis practitioners come together to test their skills and techniques in a situation as close to a reality as possible. It is an extreme form of fighting and not to be entered into without many years of experience in the art of Arnis and combatative stickfighting. It is not for the faint hearted.

Fighters can wear only gloves, groin guard and a helmet and all strikes are allowed with the stick as well as punches, kicks, knees, elbows and use of the head. If the combatants go to the ground the fight will continue after helmets are removed by the referee. The system is primarily to test the ability of the stickfighter, however, and not solely their dumog skills. The only rule is - no eye gouging. Participants can at any time submit or be withdrawn by the referee within the one 3-minute round.
