Kapamilya, Deal or No Deal is the Philippine franchise of Deal or No Deal, hosted by Pilipinas, Game KNB? host, Kris Aquino, which premiered on June 5, 2006 on ABS-CBN. The grand prize is PHP2,000,000. The game show's tagline is "Ang Kapalaran mo, Desisyon Mo" which in turn translates in English as "Your Fate, Your Decision." This is the first weekday primetime game show in the Philippines since the so-called primetime game show craze died down in late 2002, with Pilipinas, Game KNB?, the last remaining show among the weekday primetime game shows, reformatted into a daytime one after a relatively brief hiatus (although it had a primetime spinoff called Pasko Na, Game KNB? for two weeks on December 2005 to January 2006).
The first season of the show is supposed to run until August 25, 2006, to give way to another Endemol-produced program Pinoy Dream Academy, but it was expanded for two more weeks. However, on August 30, 2006, which was within the supposed penultimate week of the show's first season, it was again announced that the show's run would be extended again due to its popularity; this time it was an indefinite extension.

[edit] Gameplay
The Philippine version is very similar to the U.S. version of Deal or No Deal (including the logo), except for the sounds and musical scoring which were adapted from the Dutch version.
Before the game proper begins, a third party randomly places the possible amount of prize in the briefcases, which are distributed to 26 models which are called the 26K (identically dressed without wigs -- US style) who reveal the contents during the game. No one, including the host, knows what amounts are in the cases. Each contestant receives a new, randomly assigned set of cases. The prizes range in amounts from PHP1 to PHP2,000,000. See listing below.
After picking a case, the contestant then selects six of the remaining 25 cases, revealed one at a time. This is followed by a "phone call" by "The Banker", a mysterious figure whose face is not shown (at times a silhouette can be seen). He purportedly sits in a skybox (situated between the two audience sections) and makes an offer, via telephone to Kris (his voice is never heard) to buy the contestant's case based on the mean of the cash amounts still in play, and also based on the player's psychology. This amount is usual lower than the mean. The player is then asked by Kris the title question: "Deal or no deal?".
Should the contestant refuse the offer (by stating "No deal!"), they must choose five of the remaining cases to eliminate from consideration. The Banker makes another offer, and the game continues as before. The Banker's offer may be higher or lower than the previous offer (if a top prize is eliminated, generally the offer decreases; conversely, if lower amounts are eliminated the offer increases significantly).
The contestant is shown a button to press in case the contestant takes the banker's offer. The player can just push the button to take the offer, even without saying "Deal." On the other hand, the contestant can simply close the button's cover to imply "No Deal" without actually saying the phrase.
Subsequent rounds have the contestant withdrawing five, four, three, then two cases from play, with Banker's offer appearing in between rounds; should the contestant continue to decline The Banker's offer after the two cases were picked, he/she then eliminates one case at a time (with an intervening offer from The Banker) until two cases are left. If the player rejects the final offer, they receive whatever cash amount is contained inside the case that they originally chose.
Each contestant has several supporters (usually, three or four), who sit in a special section just off stage during his/her game. As the field of briefcases dwindles, one or more of the supporters are asked to consult with the contestant and help him/her make a decision. These exchanges have become emotional, particularly when very high and very small amounts remained and The Banker offers a large cash buyout. The contestant's supporters are typically revealed on the second Bank deal.
If in case the contestant decides to accept the offer of the Banker at the end of any round, the host will let him go on ("No deal" instead of "Deal" assumed at that point) until the end (At the end of every subsequent round, amount offered by the Banker is revealed to him and "No deal" is assumed) to determine if he made the correct decision.
Contestants, who joined through text messaging, are selected and screened with a series of interviews and tests, including a psychological one, before they appear on the show.

The currency of the amounts on the money board, on the briefcases, and offered by the Banker to the contestants is in Philippine pesos (PHP). Throughout the show, the peso sign is never used in all of the amounts on the money board, on the briefcases, and offered by the Banker to the contestants. It is because of the limited font and/or character support for the actual peso sign (a P with one or two horizontal parallel bars on the vertically middle part of its ascendant).

The following listed below are those whose full names have been confirmed.

[edit] Kapamilya, Katext
On July 10, 2006, a text-messaging game was introduced as a new segment of the show for the viewers to participate and win cash prizes. In Katext, Deal or No Deal, there are 10 special briefcases with amounts starting from PHP5,000 to P50,000 , one of which is randomly selected for play. After a briefcase is chosen, 2 briefcases are randomly opened, after which the Banker makes an offer to buy the suitcase in play. Viewers can text whether they want to "Deal", signifying that they accept the banker's offer, or "No Deal", meaning they will accept whatever amount is in the suitcase. In the next episode, the suitcase is opened to reveal the amount it contains. If the amount in the suitcase is lower than the offer, one winner will be selected from those who texted "Deal", with the Banker's offer as the prize. If the amount in the suitcase is higher than the offer, one winner will be selected from those who texted "No Deal" to take home the amount in the suitcase. winner is chosen each day from those who texted via electronic raffle.
On November 13, 2006, the segment was renamed as Kapamilya, Katext. The prizes contained in the special briefcases were increased, starting from P10,000 to P100,000. Same procedures still apply, but have been modified. On Monday, one briefcase and another has been chosen. The next day after the chosen briefcase has been opened, another briefcase is chosen, and the banker's offer is based on the briefcases already opened the previous day. This new process continues throughout the week.
[edit] Trivia
- The very first contestant of the game show was Mae Rivera, during its pilot week featuring celebrities. The very first non-celebrity contestant was Fely Marie Miras, who played a week after Rivera.
- The July 7, 2006 episode had the first two non-monetary offers from the banker: a 3-day, 3-night stay at a five-star hotel and a trip to Boracay, both "all-expenses paid." The couple would refuse each offer and later took the final banker's offer of PHP79,000. Despite the fact that their briefcase contained PHP300,000, they still got the Boracay vacation courtesy of Kris.
- On July 10, 2006, Kris commented that the contestant was able to remove completely all the low values in a full game for the first time, with 3 high values remaining. The contestant won the highest prize in a No-Deal situation (PHP200,000) at the time. Coincidentally, it was in this episode when the host revealed that the 20% of winnings are subject to prize tax, as all game shows in the Philippines do.
- For the first time, the banker offered amounts where the digits are the same. On July 12, 2006, the initial offer of the banker was PHP33,333, then it became PHP44,444, then down to PHP8,888, then up again to PHP22,222, then down again to PHP5,555, and lastly, down to PHP2,222. The banker eventually offered PHP6,000, which the contestant accepted.
- In the August 7, 2006 episode, Edna Amarille became the first person to win the second top prize of a million pesos, which is the largest prize in a no-deal situation. Edna claimed that omens from her late daughter prompted her to defend her chosen briefcase (number 7) all the way to the end.
- At the August 18, 2006 episode, a contestant accepted an offer worth PHP199,000 with PHP75, PHP400, PHP500, P400,000, and PHP2,000,000 still in play. In the Post-Deal portion, she left PHP500 and PHP2,000,000 left unopened. Interestingly, the potential final offer was never revealed, although that final offer would have been about a million pesos (the mean of the two remaining values). Her timing turned out to be good as her case (number 8) contained only PHP500.
- At the August 23, 2006 episode, the banker offered PHP1 at the first round, being his lowest bank offer ever made. The contestant won PHP100. The host even asked the contestant if he doesn't have any luck in his life.
- The August 24, 2006 episode was the very first time the voice of one of the 26K was heard. As stated in the records and statistics section above, the briefcase that contains the top prize went to the hands of Charmel De Asis the most number of times. Kris took note of this and asked her about it. Charmel responded that she too gets nervous whenever she opens the briefcase as she (like everybody else) does not know the value inside. She also revealed that 26K randomly pick up the briefcases (originally, who got which briefcase was determined by lottery). Charmel also stated that night that she usually has a large amount whenever she holds briefcases located on the back portion of the stage, this caused reactions from the audience. Luckily for Charmel, Kris, that night's contestant, and everybody else, Charmel's briefcase contained only PHP300. The said contestant went on to take the PHP214,000 offer; her briefcase contained only PHP100,000 with the two million being the only other amount.
- It is also for the same reason of holding the top prize for the most number of times, as well as her recognizable face, that Charmel rose to so much noteriety that some contestants choose her briefcase later in their respective games and picking the briefcase she was holding became a perceived test of courage. On the October 18, 2006 episode, one pregnant contestant was even advised to name her unborn child after the model should that child be a girl. Charmel's noteriety exists despite Sandeeh Orbeta and Lindsay Gonzales recently tying the record.
- The August 29, 2006 episode was the first episode when the contestant chose (in the first round) the first two briefcases containing first PHP2,000,000, then PHP1,000,000, in which Kris declared that round the worst round of all. The offer of the Banker to the contestant after the round was PHP3.
- The incident of two consecutive chosen briefcases by the contestant (in round 2) containing two 7-digit amounts happened again in the November 2, 2006 episode, but this time, the first one contained PHP1,000,000 , while the other one contained PHP2,000,000 .
- The September 5, 2006 episode was the first episode that Kris deviated from the norm by wearing a formal-style blouse and trousers set. Until that point, she has worn a gown in every episode. She reverted to wearing a gown the next episode.
- Kris again wore a formal-style blouse and trousers set in the September 19, 2006 episode, where the contestant, Pammy de Chavez, almost won the two million, only to discover that her briefcase contained PHP50,000. The final offer that night was a peso shy of a million, which she refused. The PHP2,000,000 that night was in Sandeeh Orbeta's case 11. (See Records and statistics above.) A week later, Elsa Payumo encountered the same situation, this time being offered an offer of PHP1,127,000 which she accepted, making her the show's second millionaire in the process. Her briefcase also contained PHP50,000.
- The October 4, 2006 game marked the first time the banker gave away something that is not part of an offer. A contestant's son cried after the PHP2,000,000 was opened from inside the briefcase he picked for his mother, the contestant, with the PHP1,000,000 making its appearance earlier in the game. In consolation, the banker decided to send the boy a PSP. The contestant eventually took the final offer of PHP11,000 with her chosen briefcase containing only PHP750.
- The October 18, 2006, marks the first episode wherein not all of the 26K entered the studio from behind the stairs as the usually do. While some of them did enter from behind the stairs, the others walked in front of the stairs before taking their places.
- The October 20, 2006 episode was the gameshow's 100th episode. The contestant was a blind man, accompanied by his wife. He accepted the Banker's offer of PHP472,000, with PHP1, PHP25,000 and PHP2,000,000 left in play. In the post-deal round, he opened the top prize and his chosen briefcase contained PHP25,000.
- The November 3, 2006 episode was the first episode when the offers of the Banker to the contestant did not go below PHP100,000.
- The November 6, 2006 episode received a lot of criticisms from viewers when the Banker offered the contestant the amount of P40,000 in exchange of his cousin being out of the studio. The contestant accepted the offer instead of P300. When the contestant's cousin was sent out, his face was shown at the money board during the game.
- The November 24, 2006 episode featured 26 Miss Earth 2006 candidates taking over the roles of the 26K. There are listed here according to the briefcases they held.
|
- Miss France's briefcase contained the top prize. Miss Bolivia (Jessica Anne Jordan) was also seen in the audience that night. Miss Earth 2006's coronation night would be held two nights after the episode.
- In the December 4, 2006 episode, Kris' mother, former Philippine president Corazon Aquino, appeared in the show as a member of the audience in a surprise cameo.
[edit] Celebrity players
- The following are the celebrities who became contestants in the game show. Those with an asterisk played on the first week while those with a plus sign won at least PHP100,000 in any situation:

|
|
- The following are "celebrity" contestants who are not actually celebrities, but are prominent people themselves.
- Alfonso "Boy" Umali, Jr. (Oriental Mindoro representative)
- Rene Mariano (the psychic who predicted Hero Angeles's downfall from showbiz)
- Ogie Diaz (gossip columnist and showbiz talk show host)
- Jinggoy Estrada (actor, senator, and son of former president Joseph Estrada)
[edit] Celebrity Games Related Trivia
- The July 14, 2006 episode featuring psychic Rene Mariano became controversial when the host complemented Rene's abilities because the latter predicted the end of the career of Hero Angeles at Morning Girls with Kris and Korina (previously aired on the same network), Star Circle Quest grand champion. Hero and his brother reacted at GMA-7's Startalk saying that the host's remarks where unnecessary and foul.
- September 28, 2006 is marked with the very first airing of a replay since the show started. Celebrity gossip columnist and TV host Ogie Diaz's game was supposed to be shown on that day, but a replay of the June 12 episode (the second half of Blakdyak's game) was aired instead. No official reason was announced as to why this happened, although it can be attributed to the massive power outage in the entire island of Luzon caused by winds emitted by Typhoon Milenyo; the change in the airing of the game was probably an assurance that no viewer of the show would miss Diaz's game because of the blackout. Diaz's episode was aired the following day.
- On October 2, 2006, Bea Alonzo became the biggest celebrity winner, accepting the banker's final offer of PHP900,000 with PHP100 and PHP2,000,000 being the only unexposed values left. Her briefcase contained only PHP100 while the two million was once again in the hands of model Charmel de Asis.
- Former Pinoy Big Brother: Teen Edition housemate Matt Evans from The Adventures of Pedro Penduko is the youngest ever contestant in the show. He was twelve days shy of his 18th birthday when he played in the October 10 episode and took the Banker's offer of PHP80,000. His chosen briefcase contained PHP1,000. Ordinarily, one should be at least 18 years old to be a constestant of the show.
- In the December 1, 2006 episode, midget comedian Dagul became the show's shortest ever contestant. In fact, he is so short, he had to sit on a high chair just to reach the top of the podium which hold the button. Child actors from Goin' Bulilit, where he appears as the only resident adult, were also with him to cheer him on.
- In the December 8, 2006 episode featuring Cesar Montano, the 26K wore red gowns and Santa hats as its theme for Christmas. Cesar chose briefcase 7. The host asked Cesar if the case signifies his plans of moving to rival network GMA-7. During the last round of the Post-Deal game, Kris said that if the briefcase contains PHP1.00, Cesar will remain as part of ABS-CBN. The case indeed contained PHP1.00.
[edit] Parodies
- Toni Gonzaga of Gudtaym (a sitcom previously aired on the same network) hosted "Kapamilya Meal or No Meal," which was a parody of the show. Filipinos from low income brackets were invited to the studio to play for the meal they wish to eat. The contestants were literally not given dinner to eat before the game. In the pilot episode, the contestant won and got to eat tuyo (dried fish). The prizes were lechon (roasted pig) with PHP6,000 , tinolang manok (stewed chicken soup) with PHP3,000 , adobong daga (rat stewed with soy sauce), tuyo (dried fish) and asin (salt).
- Wazzup Wazzup of Studio 23 (owned by the same network) also came up with a parody dating segment titled "Kazupista, Feel or No Feel".
- ABC 5's Wow Maling Mali, hosted by Joey de Leon, impersonating Kris Aquino, made a spoof named "Kabaranggay, Beer or No Beer", with some males as the crossdressing version of the (less than) 26K, and a go go dancing-Banker in a covered cage, offering beer in exchange with the briefcases.
- John En Shirley, a sitcom aired on the same network, featured an episode where the one of the title characters, John H. Puruntong (portrayed by Philippine Comedy King Dolphy) played as a contestant of the game show. The episode was aired on September 16, 2006. John fought for his briefcase until the end, refusing the banker's offer of PHP101,000. His briefcase contained PHP200,000, while the other remaining briefcase contained PHP1.
[edit] Criticisms
Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Nestor U. Torre expressed disappointment on the show because it is not "all that spellbinding and empathetic" since the briefcase a contestant has chosen would keep it to the end (contrary to some versions which exchanging briefcases is allowed). Also, he pointed out that the format of the show limited Aquino's effectivity as a host.[1]
