Kane Phillips was a fictional character on the Seven Network soap opera Home And Away, portrayed by actor Sam Atwell. In 2001, an afternoon alone in the Sutherland household with Dani Sutherland (Tammin Sursok) led to a rape trial, though he was found not guilty. The following year, he returned to Summer Bay, and was involved in a boat shipwreck tragedy which left him stranded in the bush with Shelley and Kirsty Sutherland. This created a bond between Kirsty and Kane which led them to embark on a secret affair. Knowing that they would never be accepted by Kirsty's family, they ran away and spent some time on the run, before Kane decided it would be best for Kirsty to be with her family. He took her back to the Bay and, calling her a "kid", threw her out of the car, breaking both of their hearts.

He returned in 2003 determined to win Kirsty back. Though she was seeing Seb Miller (Mitch Firth) at the time, she soon fell into another secret relationship with Kane. After her family discovered the truth, Dani told their father, Rhys (Michael Beckley) just to let them be. After being run over by Dani and saving the Sutherlands from a cave-in, Kane bought a ring for Kirsty. Since her family still didn't approve of their union, they eloped, and moved in with a sympathetic Irene Roberts (Lynne McGranger) in the beach house. Kirsty calmed her father's anger by claiming to be pregnant with Kane's baby. Eventually, she confessed to the lie (by which time, she was pregnant for real) and, terrified after Kane raised his hand to hit her, moved to the city to live with her mother and took out an AVO on Kane. Kirsty soon returned and they eventually reunited. As Kane became more accepted into the Bay, he and Kirsty renewed their vows in front of their friends and family at a joint ceremony with Noah Lawson (Beau Brady) and Hayley Smith (Bec Hewitt).

Soon afterwards, Kane developed testicular cancer. Although he initially kept it a secret from her, eventually, Kirsty found out and helped him through it. Immediately after being cleared, Kane's abusive father, Gus (Peter Lamb), came to the Bay. Though at first, Kane wanted nothing to do with him, Kirsty and Hayley convinced him to give Gus a second chance. However, Kane was found in possession of Gus's stolen money and was arrested. Though Morag Bellingham (Cornelia Frances) defended him in court, the case went badly. Just before the verdict was announced, Kane told Kirsty that in case he was found guilty, they would have to make a run for it. She agreed, and they left a note for Irene, and Kane and (a pregnant) Kirsty fled the Bay.
