[edit] Career

She first entered professional music in 1992 as a singer in the successful vocal group, Xscape. Burruss sang lead on hits such as "Just Kickin' It" and "My Little Secret,"(which is one song that displays the versatility of her range being a Contralto singing above Soprano range along with "Understanding") as well as writing their early hits, including "Feels So Good" and "Can't Hang." After the group disband in the late 1990s, Burruss continued as a songwriter, and is also credited as the individual who discovered Columbia Recording artist Jagged edge.

Her most notable songwriting work is the TLC hit "No Scrubs", which won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. She also made history being the first woman ever to win ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Songwriter of year that same year. She has continued to write for a number of pop and R&B artists. In 2000 she wrote "Bills, Bills, Bills" and "Bug-a-Boo," singles taken from Destiny's Child's The Writing's on the Wall album. The album The Writing's on the Wall which Kandi co-wrote 5 songs on went on to sell went on to sell 10 million records. She has also written for *NSYNC, Mariah Carey, Boyz II Men, Faith Evans,Whitney Houston, Pink and Alicia Keys. Many of her works were co-written and produced by, Kevin "Shekspere" Briggs.

In 2000, Burruss signed to Sony Records as a recording artist under the stage name Kandi. She released her first single as a soloist, "Don't Think I'm Not," in the summer of that year to some success. The song peaked at #32 at R&B, and performed even better at pop radio (peaking at #12 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart) and the Billboard Hot 100, where it peaked at #24. Her debut album, Hey Kandi... peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 200 and sold reasonably well in its first few months on the chart. Her second single, "Cheatin' on Me", was an underground hit an even featured a remix by rapper 50 cent.

In 2006 she returned to a recording career with her, as yet titled, second album that will be released through choreographer Devyne Stephens' independent record label, Upfront Records. Her single "I Need" featuring Bad Boy South artist, 8 Ball & MJG is currently heating up airways. She is featured on E-40's smash song "U And Dat" along with T-Pain.

She had been involved in a mild conflict with now-defunct group Sporty Thievz, as they parodied two songs she had written (TLC's No Scrubs and Destiny's Child's Bills, Bills, Bills) and made their own parodies, accusing the song's subject(s) of being (a) gold digger(s).
