Kamikazee

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kamikazee is a Filipino pop rock band composed of five members who were then college buddies in UP Diliman's College of Fine Arts. Kamikazee's early gigs were mostly campus events in UP Diliman like the annual UP Fair. Before they were signed for their first album, they had performed the songs "Chinelas", a cover of Ariel Rivera's "Sana Kahit Minsan," and Britney Spear's "Lucky" on their shows. They became notorious for using expletives, suggestive movements, and references to vaginas and penises in their UP Diliman performances.

Kamikazee released their first self titled album in 2003. The album's carrier single was a pop rock cover version of the Britney Spears song Lucky. In 2005, the band released 'Chiksilog' as part of the compilation album Rok On!. Other notable songs includes 'Girlfriend', 'Ung Tagalog', the heavy strong 'Tsinelas' and their cover song of Ariel Rivera's 'Sana Kahit Minsan'. In 2006 they released their second album, Maharot. The carrier single of the album is 'Narda', which is thought to be about the fictional Filipina heroine Darna but is actually about a guy who is dreaming for a girl he couldn't reach.

The band maintains close ties with another popular Philippine band, Parokya ni Edgar (PNE). Chito Miranda, PNE's vocalist, met the band members in college as he was also studying in the College of Fine Arts. In events with Parokya ni Edgar on the line-up, one band's singer would normally jam with the other band. On Parokya ni Edgar's songs Jay frequently joined Chito Miranda on songs like "Okatokat","Chikinini" and "The Yes yes Show." Jay was the back-up vocal to PNE's hit song "The Order Taker" while Jomal was on lead guitars. In turn, Kaye Abad, Chito's girlfriend, was on back-up vocals in Kamikazee's song "Martyr Nyebera."

[edit] Musical style

While the band is considered to be a rock/hardcore punk band, some of their songs have decidedly heavy metal and nu metal influences. Their first single 'Tsinelas' leans closer to nu metal than to punk a nonsense lyrics. Meanwhile some of their other songs utilize heavy, complex guitar riffs not usually associated with traditional punk.

Their second album saw the fusion of their original punk rock roots with emo, which has gained popularity in the mid 2000's. This is most notably seen in the songs Martyr Nyebera, Director's Cut,and Narda.

[edit] Success

Kamikazee had particular success because of Chinelas, Lucky, Ung Tagalog, Mmm Sarrrap, Girlfriend, Chiksilog (featured on the ROK ON! Music of Ragnarok Online), Sobrang Init, Narda and Martyr Nyebera. From their 2006 Album "Maharot", Kamikazee has reaped the success of three straight chart-toppers, beginning with "Narda", which peaked at #1 in the MYX Hit Chart for more than five weeks (and is currently the biggest song of the year). "Martyr Nyebera" had two weeks at #1 but saw an early retirement as it consequently fell off the Top 20 after only eight weeks. "Doo Bidoo", their contribution to "Kami nAPO Muna", a tribute to the Apo Hiking Society, is still currently charting, and its release might have led to "Martyr Nyebera" retiring early. "Doo Bidoo" has had two weeks at #1. Kamikazee has a new Music Video Ambisyoso which is trying to root up to the top ten chart.. Kamikazee's three singles have also been hit ring tones, "Narda", "Martyr Nyebera", "Doo Bidoo" and their jingle for deodorant brand Rexona, "First Day High", have received exceptional download sales.
