Kamikaze Kaitō Jeanne (神風怪盗ジャンヌ Kamikaze Kaitō Jannu?), also known as Divine Wind Master Thief Jeanne or Phantom Thief Jeanne, is a manga by Arina Tanemura which falls under the shōjo genre, more specifically the Magical Girl sub-genre.
CMX, an imprint of DC Comics, licensed the series as Phantom Thief Jeanne but later decided to use the original title. Toei Animation, the creator of the anime, refers to the series as Jeanne, the Kamikaze Thief on its English-language website.
Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne was later turned into a TV anime. It was featured on a Japanese monthly manga magazine Ribon during February 1998 - July 2000, 30 stories in total. Seven volumes of the manga were published. It is also on sale in Canada and the U.S. starting in the month of November 2005. The anime was a Toei Animation production, and aired from February 1999 - January 2000 on TV Asahi (44 episodes).

[edit] Story
It is almost the year 2000. God's power is scattered on earth, and if he does not gather enough by the year 2000, he will die. The devil, who wishes for this, sends his own agents to gather the energy in the form of chess pieces.
The 16 year old Kusakabe Maron is usually a normal student, but she can transform with the assistance of the angel Fin Fish in to the reincarnation of Jeanne D'Arc in order to hunt demons, which hide themselves as works of art. If a demon is defeated, the associated work of art disappears only to be replaced by an angelic painting, which is why she is called a kaitou (thief).
Maron's best friend is Miyako, the daughter of a police detective who aims to arrest Jeanne. Maron falls in love with Chiaki who is also secretly a Sinbad (demon hunter himself).
Jeanne's weapons include her Checkmate pin which she can summon from her transformation rosary, her gymnastic ribbon, a fan, and later a sword (only in the manga). The ribbon can slice through anything, if whipped, and can also be used to grab a hold of things. The fan deflects attacks, while the sword is basically your regular sword, only it can checkmate. In the anime, she first uses the "Rebound Ball" which is like a rubber yo-yo that can stick to almost anything, and is useful for smacking people with. In addition, it would appear she has access to comical bombs that can vary to smoke screens or actual explosions. The ribbon, which comes halfway through the series, is also used as a way of checkmating demons in the anime.
Chiaki, or Kaitou Sindbad (Sinbad), uses daggers in the manga and pins, but a chakram-like weapon in the anime. As time goes on in the anime, Sinbad is revealed to also use a special type of string that he can trap demons in. Unlike Jeanne, Sinbad is able to conjure several pins at once, blasting them towards a demon for a checkmate.
If Jeanne's Ribbon or Sinbad's Bandanna is undone, then they both go back to being their original selves.
Maron and Chiaki fall in love with each other as time goes on in the anime and manga. Chiaki at first "fakes" falling in love just to get closer to Maron because he knows Maron is Jeanne. Later he falls in love for real after realizing that Maron's worth the effort even if she does "hate" him.
Maron on the other is confused and does not know what "love" means because she was left alone without a family, so no one taught her. At first their relationship gets to a rocky start, with her always freaking out at Chiaki's advances. She sees the other side of Chiaki though, and realizes that he's not such a bad guy after all.
The 7-volume manga contains a few plot twists involving Fin Fish, Noin, and of course, Jeanne and the people around her. The anime totally ignores and neglects Fin Fish's background story which is told with detail in the manga and becomes an integral plot piece to the overall storyline of the latter.
The anime which have 44 episodes mostly is filled with filler episodes.
[edit] Characters
- Kusakabe Maron (日下部まろん Kusakabe Maron?) / Kaito Jeanne (怪盗ジャンヌ?) - Maron is 16 and is just an ordinary high school student who is also very good in gymnastics at school. But behind that sweet face is really Kaitou Jeanne, the reincarnation of Jeanne d'Arc. Her mission is to seal the demons who are in the world by 'Checkmate'-ing it, which later turns it into a chess piece. In the anime, she is voiced by Houko Kuwashima She is very stubborn and says the total opposite of how she really feels. She consider herself very lonely and does not even realize all her wonderful friends are with her. (including fin) She is scared of being lonely which shows in episode 20 or in Volume 3. Although she says she can't stand Chiaki she actually loves him a lot.
- Nagoya Chiaki (名古屋稚空 Nagoya Chiaki?) / Kaito Sinbad (怪盗シンドバッド?) - Chiaki is 16 and is a new student who also lives in the same apartment complex as Maron (in the apartment next door) and is also in Maron's and Miyako's class. He ran away from home because of something he wanted to do. Like Maron, Chiaki also has a secret identity, which is Kaitou Sinbad. He also has the ability to seal demons using pins, like Jeanne. Although he always seemed to go against Maron (at first), he does it for a reason. He also knew about Maron's true identity. In the manga instead of using pins to seal demons, he used daggers. Chiaki is a "ladies man" and always tries to seduce Maron, who at first, can't stand him and his habit of always trying to protect her. At first he says he was just trying to get closer but later he says he wants to protect her forever. He is a kaitou because of Access. Finn had been sent down to earth to help Maron with Access, but she got kidnapped by the devil. Access, helpless, ran to tell god, who told Access to watch over Maron. However, Access was confused. What was he supposed to do? He floated around in a city, depressed until he was grabbed by a young teenage boy, Chiaki. Oddly enough, Chiaki could see him. Access revealed the whole story at Chiaki's house and Chiaki agreed to help him. Access gave him the power to seal demons and thus, Kaitou Sinbad was born. The origin of this name was because, in the anime, at least, Access and Chiaki met in front of a movie theater and they were showing 'Adventures of Sinbad'.
- Finn Fish - Finn is the angel, or a half-angel (jun-tenshi) who helps Maron detect demons and is also the one who transforms Maron into Jeanne d'Arc. As the story goes on, Fin turns to the dark side and thus becomes a fallen angel named Da-Tenshi Finn Fish. She is in love with the devil.
- Access Time - Also like Finn, Access is Chiaki's 'side-kick' who detects demons and is the one who gave Chiaki the power to transform into Kaitou Sinbad and to seal demons. He is a dark angel (kuro-tenshi). He has a crush on Finn.
- Todaiji Miyako (東大寺都 Tōdaiji Miyako?) - Miyako is Maron and Chiaki's classmate who lives across the hall from Maron. Miyako is the child of parents who are detectives, and thus Miyako is always trying to catch Jeanne. She says the reason of catching Jeanne is to prove Maron's innocence because half a month before the beginning of the series people in their class were saying Maron looks and talks just like Jeanne. Although Miyako does not know that Maron is really Jeanne she tries so hard with tricks and plots that are rather dangerous to Jeanne just to catch her. She causes a lot of trouble for Jeanne and her mission. Miyako does not know about Maron's true self until the end. She is MADLY in love with Chiaki, but gives up on him since he is more interested in Maron. She is stubborn and is exactly like Maron. She usually gets mad every time Jeanne escapes.
- Minazuki Yamato (水無月大和 Minazuki Yamato?) - Yamato is the classmate of Maron, Chiaki and Miyako. He holds the position of class president iinchou, though most of the class seems to lack respect for him because of his gentle, unassuming nature. Yamato is a shy student who has a slight crush on Maron. His innocent and pure heart makes it easy for demons to possess him. Later in the series, he joins Miyako to try and catch Sinbad. Though he has a crush on Maron, Miyako somehow catches his attention, and it's quietly reciprocated though nothing ever really comes of it.
- Noin Claude - He is a demon who is disguised as Hijiri Shikaido, a history teacher in Maron's class. In the past, he was actually Noin Claude, who assisted the original Jeanne d'Arc 500 years ago. When God did not save Jeanne, the one he deeply loved, from the burning at the stake, he cursed God and surrendered his soul to the devil. At one point he tries to rape Maron, thinking that it will "resurrect" her memory of loving him.
- Myst - (Anime only) Another demon (a pure breed) who intends on killing Maron. She is more powerful than Noin.
