Kamichu! (かみちゅ!~かみさまでちゅうがくせい~ Kami-chu! ~Kamisama de Chugakusei~?), also known as Teenage Goddess, is a Japanese manga and television anime series strongly influenced by the Shinto religion, that follows the adventures of Hitotsubashi Yurie (一橋ゆりえ) (surname firstname) and friends. The anime series has been broadcast by the anime television network, Animax, across its respective networks worldwide, including Japan, as well as East Asia, Southeast Asia, where it received its first ever English-language broadcast, under the title Kamichu - Teenage Goddess, and other regions.
Yurie is a shy and otherwise ordinary middle-school girl who suddenly discovers that, overnight, she has become a kami (神) (a god in the Shinto sense). She has no idea what kind of god she is or what her powers are. Her friends give her the nickname "kamichu" from "kami" (god) and "chugakusei" (middle school student).
Kamichu! is set in the city of Onomichi in Hiroshima prefecture, on the shores of Japan's Inland Sea. Many of the temples and landmarks shown in the anime are real places in and around the city, faithfully depicted.
There are sixteen episodes in the series, each 25 minutes long. Twelve HD (720p) episodes have already been broadcast on Japanese television (TV Asahi) in a slightly abbreviated form (DVD eps are 25-30 min long) with another four episodes reserved for release with the rest of the series in DVD format, two episodes per disc, released on 23 March 2006. At 2005 Japan media arts festival, Kamichu! was honored with the excellence prize in animation division. [2]
